About The Position

The Ultrasound Extern, under the direction of a licensed Sonographer, performs diagnostic ultrasound imaging ordered by the provider. Assists in transporting and preparing patients, cleans and stocks supplies in assigned areas, and assists technologists as needed. This position utilizes Cerner and Hospital Information System (HIS) software programs.

Requirements

Required Education: High School Diploma / GED.
Letter of recommendation from Sonography Program Director
Must be a student (entering spring semester) in an Ultrasound program
BLS certification

Responsibilities

Performs diagnostic ultrasound exams under the supervision of a licensed sonographer
Assists the sonographer as needed during imaging procedures
Attends to patients’ needs and promptly reports to a sonographer if unable to accommodate requests
Moves or transports patients between hospital departments via wheelchair, stretcher or beds
Initiates and follows through with proper hand-off of patients
Maintains work areas and equipment in a clean and organized manner
Uses portable O2 tanks and regulates O2 flow
May perform other duties as assigned or requested and job specifications can be modified or updated at any time
Using the AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) process explains procedures and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during exams.
Follows department specific standard work and departmental policies.
Practices aseptic techniques and good infection control procedures consistent with hospital policy.
Secures and returns supplies and maintains orderliness and cleanliness of the work areas between each patient.
