Reporting to VP, Underwriting, the SBA Underwriter will underwrite SBA 7(a) small loans in compliance with SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and internal credit policies. The SBA Underwriter will independently analyze, structure, and underwrite SBA-guaranteed loans, working closely with Sales, Operations, and Closing teams to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance throughout the loan lifecycle.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of underwriting experience, with direct SBA 7(a) small loan underwriting experience required
  • Demonstrated, working knowledge of SBA SOPs and SBA eligibility requirements
  • Experience underwriting loans in a bank, credit union, CDFI, or SBA lending environment
  • Proficiency reviewing financial documents, including tax returns, bank statements, and credit reports
  • Strong understanding of cash flow analysis, DSCR, and global cash flow
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel

Nice To Haves

  • Experience underwriting SBA loans under $500K
  • Experience in mission-driven, CDFI, or community lending organizations
  • Familiarity with SBA audits, reviews, or lender oversight processes
  • Experience using loan origination systems (LOS) and third-party credit tools

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite SBA 7(a) small business loans, ensuring full compliance with SBA SOP requirements, eligibility criteria, and credit standards
  • Analyze borrower and guarantor financials, including: Business and personal tax returns Interim financial statements Cash flow and debt service coverage (DSCR) Global cash flow analysis
  • Evaluate credit reports, collateral, management experience, industry risk, and repayment ability
  • Structure loans within SBA and internal credit guidelines, identifying risks and mitigants
  • Apply deep knowledge of current SBA SOPs, including eligibility, affiliation rules, use of proceeds, collateral, and guarantor requirements
  • Review and verify loan documentation to ensure SBA compliance prior to approval and closing
  • Perform KYC, due diligence, and fraud prevention reviews in accordance with SBA and internal policies
  • Identify policy exceptions, document credit rationale, and escalate complex or high-risk cases as appropriate
  • Manage underwriting pipeline within established SLAs, balancing quality, compliance, and turnaround time
  • Communicate clearly with internal partners and clients regarding loan status, conditions, and documentation needs
  • Partner with Sales, Operations, and Closing teams to ensure smooth handoffs and timely funding
  • Participate in special projects, audits, SBA reviews, and process improvements as needed
  • Make credit decisions within delegated approval authority
  • Provide recommendations on borderline or complex SBA loans to management and credit committees
