About The Position

The University of Alabama System (UA System) is seeking applications for the position of University Counsel. This on-site role is based in Birmingham on the campus of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Reporting to the Deputy Chief University Counsel-Business and Advising, the University Counsel will provide a broad range of legal services and strategic advice to UAB and its affiliated entities.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama or must become licensed within six (6) months of hire.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant legal experience.
  • Demonstrated success in effectively serving a broad, diverse, and demanding clientele.
  • Excellent legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working cohesively on team projects.
  • Established ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous transactional and contract experience.

Responsibilities

  • Managing administrative matters.
  • Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing transactional documents.
  • Providing legal advice and counsel, particularly in the areas of facilities and construction, athletics, academic research, regulations, contracts, and other transactional and business matters.
  • Assisting the Chief University Counsel and Deputy Chief University Counsel-Business and Advising as needed, including research and drafting.
  • The position may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
