About The Position

Magellan International School (MIS) in Austin, Texas, has an opening for an Upper Primary and Secondary Librarian. This position will jointly maintain and expand the library and media center for the school in support of its curricular program. The Librarian is an educator who has additional specialized training in library media center programs and activities. The successful candidate will have experience in collection development, library instruction and library programming for upper elementary - high school students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education with endorsement in Library Science or Master's Degree in Library Science or Education
  • Two years of experience in school libraries (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience creating a stimulating classroom environment

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly preferred
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience, preferably in secondary Humanities
  • Experience and/or training in the IB MYP & DP Program
  • Dynamic and empathetic communicator
  • Deep knowledge of children’s literature and digital literacy resources

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with stakeholder groups, formulate the philosophy, goals, objectives, policies of library services to meet the needs of the school
  • Develop and implement plans and procedures to achieve long range goals, determine objectives and set priorities for each school year, and apply effective procedures to evaluate accomplishment of goals and objectives
  • Design, refine and implement the Library and Research Skills Scope and Sequence in collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning, coordinators and classroom teachers
  • Engage in collaborative planning with classroom teachers to co-design Units of Inquiry and research lessons
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate research skills into the Program of Inquiry through embedded research sessions or stand alone research classes
  • Conduct classes and provide research support for Upper Primary and Secondary school as needed
  • Support and guide students and teachers through research during IB milestones such as: the Expo, Personal Projects as well as the Extended Essay
  • Encourage a community of readers by fostering an interest in literature and reading through the library environment and literacy events
  • Assist students in locating materials and resources (physical and digital) appropriate to their individual needs
  • Instruct and assist students and teachers in appropriate and effective use of the library
  • Attend weekly professional development, faculty meetings and collaborative planning grade level meetings
  • Create and post periodic communications to the parent community
  • Support teachers' understanding and use of research, technologies and media through delivering professional development, modeling and co-planning
  • Curate a collection of resources, in various formats, that encourage lifelong reading and the development of research skills
  • Select, evaluate and maintain the library collection (inventory); prepare library and research reports as needed
  • Stay up-to-date on state, regional, national, and international standards for library services and programs
  • Manage the library budget in consultation with the Director of Teaching and Learning and Chief Financial Officer
  • Coordinate the schedule and use of the library facilities for academic and extracurricular events
  • Manage library special events and programming including Book Fairs, Author Visits, & the Summer Reading Program
