About The Position

As a member of the Health and Wellness team, the Upper School Counselor supports the students, parents, and teachers of the school community and works closely with other school counselors, administrators, and members of the health and wellness team. The ideal candidate holds a master’s or doctoral degree in social work, clinical, counseling, or school psychology, is licensed in New York State, and has experience with high school-age populations. Ideal candidates possess excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach. A balanced, healthy mindset and a developmentally, research-based approach are a must. Strong counseling and crisis intervention skills and the ability to collaborate with parents and outside professional referrals are required. The role consists of the following duties and responsibilities:

Responsibilities

  • Reports to the divisional heads alongside the other Upper School counselor and the counseling team regarding the emotional well-being of students
  • Provides short-term counseling to students
  • Manages psychiatric emergencies
  • Provides appropriate referrals to external psychological services for students as needed
  • Acts as liaison between external treatment providers and school
  • Consults with parents regarding child social and emotional well-being
  • Co-facilitates parenting workshops and faculty workshops
  • Collaborates with the health and wellness team on the planning of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) interventions and curricula
  • Leads periodic small-group lesson on the topics of mental health, stress management, emotional regulation, and identity development
