We are seeking a dynamic and talented teacher for our Upper School Spanish language program, which centers speaking, listening, writing, and reading comprehension in the target language. The scope of the position will encompass courses from our foundational levels through our most advanced, possibly including AP Spanish Language and Composition. Ability to teach other languages (namely Latin, French, or Chinese) is also of interest but not required. Successful candidates will emphasize cultural and linguistic connections in class, demonstrate an ability to differentiate instruction, and use a variety of assessment strategies. S/he will also need to collaborate with World Language teachers across divisions and participate in the implementation of an articulated language curriculum.

Requirements

  • The successful candidate has native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and experience teaching Spanish at the secondary or post-secondary level.
  • The ability to teach another language offered at Laurel is welcome.
  • She or he ideally holds an advanced degree in (e.g., language, literature, pedagogy, etc.), possesses excellent English writing and speaking skills, and has basic information technology and computer skills.
  • A passion for working with Upper School age students is essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience teaching girls is helpful but not required, as is previous experience in a private educational setting.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and implementation of daily lessons
  • Delivery of assignments and timely evaluation of all relevant class work and student progress
  • Design and implementation of appropriate, authentic assessments and support of individual student learning styles
  • Timely and proactive communication with parents about student progress
  • Serving as an advisor to a small group of students
  • Collaboration with other members of the faculty, administration, and staff on experiential, interdisciplinary and community-based opportunities that add to the school community
  • Active participation in all faculty and staff meetings
  • Effective and timely communication with varied school constituencies in person, through email and through voicemail
  • Support of divisional and school-wide initiatives through committee work, where appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned
