About The Position

The Upward Bound Summer Instructor reports to the Director of Upward Bound and assists in curriculum development while teaching assigned subjects during the summer session. The role focuses on preparing first-generation college-bound high school students to achieve educational goals, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other objectives outlined in the Upward Bound grant program.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in math, science, English, technology, social science, or related field, OR Secondary teaching certification in the subject area and/or at least 12 college credit hours in the subject area.
  • Demonstrated experience working with adolescents with varying academic needs and abilities.
  • Committed to continuous professional growth through ongoing education, webinars, and staying current with emerging trends in instructional pedagogy.
  • Exhibits a customer service mindset with flexibility and adaptability in rapidly changing, complex environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • High energy, self-starter capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Proficient in designing, maintaining, and implementing lesson plans tailored to student needs, while creating student-centered classrooms with effective management strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in team settings.
  • Ability to engage adult learners of various skill levels and foster an environment that supports their academic growth and success.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with first-generation college-bound students.
  • Master’s degree and/or teacher certification with knowledge and skills in math, science, English, technology, or social science.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience instructing, tutoring, or providing support services in an academic setting or learning center.

Responsibilities

  • Teach various subjects at the Upward Bound Academy, including but not limited to math, English, foreign language, science, interpersonal communication, public speaking, career exploration, test-taking skills, study skills, college readiness, research techniques, and history.
  • Provide feedback to students to support academic growth and maintain regular communication with Upward Bound staff regarding student progress.
  • Develop instructional materials, curriculum outlines, and course resources, including final assessments and learning activities.
  • Use assessment results to improve instruction and enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, feedback, and performance.
  • Submit reports in a timely manner according to program guidelines and federal requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Upward Bound and the Dean of Student Services, aligned with the Upward Bound grant’s goals and the College’s strategic priorities.
