About The Position

PPG Aerospace Transparency has an amazing opportunity available for a Urethane Research Chemist at our Sylmar, CA location. This is an onsite position, requiring up to 10% travel. As an S&T Urethane Research Chemist, you will work on the development of aerospace transparency urethane products to meet customer specification requirements. You will also support product design, formulation, development, testing, product scale-up and launch of new products, and production support of urethane processes for Aerospace Transparencies. This role has growth potential to advance to manager or technical fellow routes long term. You will report to the S&T Research Manager.

Requirements

  • Only US Citizens, Green Card holders, political asylees, or refugees are eligible to apply.
  • Ph.D in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Plastics Engineering, or a similar field required
  • 6+ years of relevant experience is required (can include PhD experience).

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with urethane chemistry, urethane applications for casting, film extrusion, scale-up, and product launch are highly desired.
  • Familiarity with polymerization chemistry, specifically polyurethane chemistry is preferred.
  • Prior experience with handling isocyanates is preferred.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques and results for material characterization: DSC, DMA, TGA, TMA, FTIR, UV-VIS, GPC, HPLC, GC-MS, and Titrations.
  • Operation of electronic, mechanical, or manual laboratory equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and leads urethane projects and strategy using standard PPG technology and methods, or current scientific understanding.
  • Plans and conducts impactful research to quickly solve technical problems in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Provides innovative technical solutions to challenging problems.
  • Further advances urethane casting processes and audits of off-site film extrusion locations.
  • Follows experimental procedures, generates reliable data, and demonstrates the ability to contribute to the design of experiments.
  • Leads independent projects or portions of larger projects.
  • Develops project timelines and goals.
  • Contributes to Intellectual Property and legal discussions.
  • Demonstrates and communicates results with the work team through the preparation of monthly departmental or technical reports.
  • Documentation of technical results.
  • Responsible for technical communications and interfacing with customers.
  • Works with customers, sales, product support engineering, design engineering, manufacturing personnel, quality assurance, PPG manufacturing facilities, and regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for being technically aware of industry trends, government regulations, customer requirements, and PPG Aerospace Transparency's manufacturing process requirements.
  • Demonstrates proactive safety leadership.
