Requirements

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.
  • Urology-specific training required
  • At least 1 year experience, and coursework a plus.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy; strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; comfortable querying providers.
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and handle a steady coding volume.
  • Knowledge of payer requirements, documentation guidelines, and auditing processes.
  • Team-oriented, proactive about process improvements, and adaptable to changing regulations.
  • 2 years of professional coding experience, preferably in urology or surgical specialties.
  • Proficient in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and medical terminology relevant to urology.
  • Experience with EHR systems and coding/billing software.
  • Strong knowledge of hospital and physician billing rules.

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for urology office visits, procedures (e.g., cystoscopy, TURP, ureteroscopy), diagnostics, and durable medical equipment.
  • Apply correct modifiers and follow payer-specific rules (Medicare, Medicaid, commercial plans).
  • Review clinical documentation (operative notes, clinic notes, pathology reports, imaging) to ensure coding integrity and medical necessity.
  • Query providers when documentation is incomplete or unclear; educate clinicians on documentation best practices.
  • Audit coded encounters for accuracy and compliance; track and report coding error trends.
  • Support charge capture and timely claim submission; coordinate with billing/AR to resolve coding-related denials and rework.
  • Maintain knowledge of coding guidelines, payer policies, and CPT/ICD-10 updates affecting urology services.
  • Participate in coding meetings, staff training, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Use EHR and coding software (e.g., Epic, Cerner, 3M, Optum360) to abstract and code encounters.
  • Assist with oncology coding, charge capture and backlog coverage as needed.
