About The Position

The Utility Operator will be responsible for the safe and environmentally sound and efficient daily operation of the facility and overhead cranes on the refuse pit. In this process you will lift, move, mix municipal solid waste (MSW) using hoisting attachments such as a grapple or auxiliary hoist mechanism such as hook or sling; with the intent of feeding fuel, MSW, to one of three boilers, mixing the fuel in the refuse pit to achieve a more homogeneous fuel for boiler operations, and moving various loads to and from the charging deck.

Requirements

  • GED/HS Diploma preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, technical procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, and other procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively with supervisors and other employees of the organization.
  • Shift Work This position works on a rotating 12-hour shift including nights, weekends and some holidays.
  • Overtime will be required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Frequently exposed to high temperatures and outside weather conditions.
  • Working near moving machinery as well as noisy and dusty environments; must be able to wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) including a negative pressure respirator in accordance with OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910.134.
  • Climbing ladders and structures; must be able to tolerate heights.
  • Frequently required to stand, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach.

  • Forklift driving experience a plus.
  • Three to six months of related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Formal technical or apprentice training is desirable, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs daily routine inspections/PM’s of overhead crane(s) and fills out necessary log sheets according to procedures.
  • Performs troubleshooting on overhead cranes and reports all malfunctioning equipment/components through the issuance of work orders.
  • Performs checks as required by the daily/weekly activities book, the monthly critical items check list, etc.
  • Manipulates or depresses crane controls such as pedals, levers, or buttons to regulate speed and direction of the crane and hoist movement according to written, verbal or signal instructions.
  • Performs lockout and tag-out of equipment in support of maintenance activities.
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment and an orderly work area around crane and hoist.
  • Notifies Shift Supervisor of defective operating or material conditions.
