About The Position

The Utility Worker IV serves as a lead worker and working crew leader within the Street & Bridge Division. This position performs and leads crews in skilled and semi-skilled manual labor related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, storm sewers, culverts, parks, rights-of-way, and related public infrastructure. Field Operations & Construction: Leads and participates in excavation, repair, and replacement of drainage lines, storm sewer systems, culverts, and related infrastructure. Performs maintenance and construction of streets, sidewalks, ditches, rights-of-way, and parks. Digs, shores, and backfills trenches manually or with mechanical assistance. Places and aligns pipe in trenches excavated by backhoe or trencher; adjusts culverts and piping to ensure proper grade and flow. Assists with asphalt and concrete repairs as assigned. Assembles, installs, maintains, and removes traffic control devices and barricades in accordance with traffic control standards. Operates and assists with storm drainage camera inspection systems to inspect drainage lines and identify blockages or structural deficiencies. Equipment & Tool Operation: Safely operates and maintains equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, small track excavators, trenchers, front-end loaders, air compressors, water pumps, gas-powered saws, air hammers, and other assigned machinery. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of hand tools, including shovels, sledgehammers, sharp shooters, and other manual tools. Performs routine equipment checks and reports maintenance needs. Uses City radio and communication devices appropriately and effectively. Safety & Compliance: Ensures proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to established safety procedures. Implements advanced traffic control procedures to protect crew members and the public. Evaluates job site conditions and determines necessary safety precautions when hazards are present. Promotes a culture of safety and leads by example in safe work practices. Judgment & Leadership: Works independently when required and demonstrates sound decision-making skills in the field. Assesses site conditions and determines appropriate methods and materials to complete tasks effectively. Coordinates crew activities to ensure timely and efficient completion of assignments. Administrative & General: Must have and maintain, without interruption, required certifications and licenses. Works assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED and one (1) to three (3) months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a good driving record.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying materials, kneeling, crouching and bending; pushing, pulling and reaching; and standing for prolonged periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Experience operating excavation and heavy equipment.
  • Experience with storm sewer camera inspection systems.
  • Additional training in traffic control, trench safety, or public works operations.
