About The Position

T.L. Hanna High School is looking for applicants for our varsity competition cheer coaching position. The Yellow Jackets will be in the 4A classification in the fall of 2026 and are coming off winning region championships in 10 of the last 12 years and placing 4th and 6th place respectively the last two seasons in the state championship. Our school district is tremendously supportive of all athletic programs, and the competition cheer program has a dedicated practice facility for use on campus. All teaching positions will be considered, as well as non-teaching applicants, who provide the best fit for our program.

Requirements

  • Possess leadership skills that will be conducive to high levels of productivity
  • Proven decision-making skills and a track record of initiative, effort and commitment to young people and education is a must
  • Above all, this coach should be a “people person” and indicate, through his/her actions, a personality that is conducive to positive interaction with students, staff and parents

Nice To Haves

  • Experience coaching competitive cheer (preferred)
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in planning, organizing, and supervising a school cheer program (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • The foremost responsibility is to the students.
  • The first duty of the coach is to see that high standards are maintained throughout the entire program.
  • The staff, equipment, uniforms and condition of facilities should reflect pride and a standard of excellence.
  • Directly responsible for the welfare and safety of all athletes in the program.
  • Teaching the fundamentals of physical conditioning and cheering are critical in this responsibility.
  • The coach and his/her staff should be well-versed in care and prevention of athletic injuries.
  • Coordinates the program and is responsible for leading, managing and guiding his/her staff of assistant coaches (if applicable).
  • Stays up-to-date in the current knowledge and trends in competitive cheer.
  • The methods and techniques that are used and taught should indicate an understanding and interest in young people.
  • Is directly responsible for the cleanliness, care, and maintenance of locker rooms, facilities, equipment, bleachers and courts.
  • Is responsible for the program abiding by the rules and regulations of the school, the district and the South Carolina High School League.
  • Makes sure that all of the participants are eligible, physical exams and insurance are carefully recorded and the academic performance is monitored and emphasized.
  • Works for the total athletic program.
  • Has a good rapport with the faculty and the athletic staff.
  • He/she should emphasize student participation in other sports and activities.
  • At no time should any basketball coach encourage players to specialize unless the athletic director and coaches of the other sports are notified and it is in the best interest and welfare of the student involved.
  • Is directly responsible for the inventory of uniforms and equipment at the end of the season and the proper storage thereof.
