About The Position

This position provides advanced technical support for the Equine Surgery Service and contributes additional clinical support within the Livestock Hospital based on operational needs. The role assists with elective and emergency surgical procedures, performs skilled equine and livestock handling, and provides pre‑ and post-operative patient care. The position is responsible for maintaining sterile technique, supporting diagnostic and imaging procedures, calculating procedure estimates, and ensuring appropriate documentation. This role also upholds and monitors biosecurity protocols across both services and participates in biosecurity meetings. The position supports clinical teaching by assisting students in developing safe and effective large animal handling and technical skills. Veterinary Teaching Hospital At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to provide administration and direction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and provide a support facility for service to the general public and referring veterinarians.

Requirements

  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND one year of experience assisting in animal surgery, administering anesthesia to an animal.
  • Must have the ability to safely and proficiently handle horses and Livestock species.
  • Must have the ability to restrain horses and livestock properly and knowledge of safety around the species.
  • Minimum 6 months of equine and livestock experience.
  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician (PVT) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) by the time of hire.
  • Certified in the State of Colorado or other eligible state determined by CACVT.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires)
  • On-call Status
  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred 2 years experience in large animal/Equine surgery
  • Experience in working in an academic veterinary hospital setting
  • Organizational abilities in a fast-paced, high-demand environment
  • Knowledge and experience of veterinary surgical procedures and instruments

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparation for elective and emergency surgical caseload by establishing knowledge of equipment, instruments and patient positioning required for surgical procedures.
  • Proficient in sterile prep and sterile field requirements, as well as other surgery specific process
  • Jogging horses for lameness exams, preparations of nerve and intra-articular joint injections using aseptic technique.
  • Patient restraint and safety during procedures including twitching, head catch and/or chemical restraint
  • Pre op and Post op care
  • Assist in bandage changes, catheter placements, sedating for exams and procedures, IV perfusions, wound care
