The Role The American Express Global Financial Crimes Compliance (GFCC) function provides second-line policy, framework, oversight, and control solutions to meet the Company’s legal, regulatory, and risk management mandates in connection with Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter Terrorism Financing (CTF), Sanctions, and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC). The GFCC portfolio comprises all aspects of the Company’s first- and second-line financial crime risk management (FCRM) activities, covering all lines of business in the United States and both proprietary and non-proprietary global markets. Reporting to the Global Head of Anti-Bribery and Corruption, the Head of ABC Program Execution is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the ABC Program and supporting the Global Head of ABC in setting the ABC compliance strategy and driving execution across all business lines and jurisdictions. This role ensures globally consistent implementation of the ABC Program within GFCC and across all business lines and geographies. The position also ensures that the ABC function operates in a coordinated manner across GFCC to deliver an integrated financial crime risk management framework. Additionally, this role supports oversight of GFCC’s contribution to the enterprise-wide fraud and insider risk management frameworks. The position requires close coordination with business leadership, compliance partners, legal, risk, and operations teams, as well as direct engagement with domestic and international regulators.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Anti-Bribery and Corruption compliance.
  • Extensive experience developing and operating ABC compliance programs, including risk assessments, internal controls, training, and testing.
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. and international ABC regimes (e.g., U.S., EU, UK).
  • Demonstrated experience managing regulatory relationships and responding to regulatory examinations or inquiries.
  • Proven leadership designing and managing enterprise compliance programs within complex, matrixed environments.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to interact effectively with senior executives and regulators.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in a related field (e.g., JD, MBA) preferred.
  • U.S. law degree with experience practicing in the ABC space is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day execution of the ABC compliance program, including policies, procedures, risk assessments, controls, and testing frameworks.
  • Partner with first- and second-line stakeholders to support implementation of the firm’s fraud risk management strategies.
  • Ensure the ABC team operates in an integrated manner and delivers consistent ABC and fraud risk management guidance.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure ABC and fraud risks are managed holistically and consistently across lines of business and geographies.
  • Develop and implement management information and reporting to identify bribery and corruption risks and drive effective risk ownership across first- and second-line teams.
  • Lead or support regulatory examinations, audits, and internal reviews related to ABC and fraud.
  • Partner with the General Counsel’s Organization to analyze evolving global ABC laws and regulatory expectations and translate them into second-line compliance requirements.
  • Escalate issues and potential breaches through appropriate governance channels.
  • Support the development and enhancement of technology platforms and tools that improve risk management effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Provide expert-level guidance to business units and compliance personnel on ABC and fraud risks and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee development and delivery of relevant enterprise-wide training.
  • Manage and develop a global team supporting program execution.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
