About The Position

Quarterhill is seeking a Vice President, Technology & Software Development to lead the strategy, design, and delivery of the company’s next generation of software platforms and products. This role is responsible for shaping the future-state software roadmap, driving modern development practices, and ensuring that new software initiatives align with business priorities and customer needs. Reporting to the COO/CEO, this leader will focus on new software development, platform evolution, and architectural direction, working through existing engineering leadership for execution. The role provides senior oversight of software strategy while partnering closely with Product, Operations, and Commercial teams to deliver scalable, high-impact solutions. This is a software-first leadership role and is not responsible for enterprise IT, infrastructure operations, or information security.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development, including senior leadership roles.
  • Proven experience leading enterprise-scale software platforms and new product development.
  • Strong background in cloud-native architectures and modern software development practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to set technical direction and lead through influence rather than direct execution.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to balance innovation with operational realities.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own the long-term strategy for Quarterhill’s software platforms and new product development.
  • Establish a clear roadmap for platform modernization, new software initiatives, and future capabilities.
  • Evaluate build vs. buy decisions and emerging technologies to support business growth and innovation.
  • Provide senior leadership and direction for new software development initiatives across the organization.
  • Set architectural principles and development standards to ensure scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Promote modern software development practices, including cloud-native architectures, CI/CD pipelines, and automation.
  • Work through engineering leadership to ensure effective execution of software strategy and delivery.
  • Provide guidance and direction to the VP of Engineering and other technical leaders as appropriate.
  • Align software development priorities with delivery capacity and organizational goals.
  • Partner closely with Product Management to translate product vision and customer needs into executable software plans.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Sales, and Client Delivery teams to ensure new software solutions are practical, scalable, and customer-ready.
  • Participate in key customer and stakeholder discussions as a senior software leader.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software quality, performance, and developer productivity.
  • Identify and address technical debt and legacy constraints that limit innovation or scalability.
  • Champion innovation while maintaining disciplined delivery and risk management.
  • Support budget planning and investment decisions related to software platforms and development initiatives.
  • Monitor progress against software roadmaps, delivery milestones, and value realization.
  • Use data and metrics to inform prioritization and decision-making.
