About The Position

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is seeking a Video Systems Technical Specialist. Under the general supervision of the Interim Associate Dean Los Angeles, this position coordinates and manages all technical elements of video production, playback and display, which includes advanced systems for virtual production and immersion and may include live event production, digital media post-production, projection systems, and support of video-related research. This classification requires a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of video/media production and post-production principles and practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of video/media systems design.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Evidence of a Degree in Engineering, Theatre Production, Film or related field or related field.
  • Experience in video/digital media production, post-production, or media programming experience.
  • Experience with software and systems for virtual production, virtual reality, projection mapping, and/or similar practices.
  • Experience with networking systems, AV over IP (Dante or similar), and the design of networks.
  • Experience working with creatives in a production or post production environment.
  • Experience in systems calibration for camera tracking and/or motion capture.
  • System management level experience in video/media systems and workflow for film, broadcasting, streaming and/or live events.
  • Experience with software for video/media programming and signal processing such as Touch Designer, Resolume, Unreal Engine, Disguise D3, Pixera, Isadora, Max/MSP, Unity, Blender, and/or similar.
  • Experience in production methods and techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the activities of subordinates, principally student workers.
  • Plans, selects and creates work methods, work procedures, workflow, and standards for quantity and quality of work.
  • Coordinates the design, configuration and execution of video systems for events, installations, virtual production, research projects, and similar efforts.
  • Coordinates with faculty, community, artists or production representatives and reads contracts to ascertain needs for video/display support; determines feasibility and makes arrangements for special equipment rental equipment and related items.
  • Assists in determining staffing needs and scheduling crews for events.
  • Assists faculty and graduate students on audio-related research activities.
  • Recommends purchase of new or replacement equipment; orders and obtains materials for production.
  • Oversees and maintains inventory on all items and equipment, participates in ordering or orders supplies.
  • Performs safety checks on equipment and facilities ensuring safety guidelines are being met.
  • Monitors and controls systems and software for video playback, control, signal distribution, and networking, included but not limited to Disguise D3, Pixera, Unreal NDisplay, Spout, Syphon, Dante AV, Touch Designer, motion/camera tracking software, and similar.
  • Provides Day 2 support as IT Liaison
  • Other AV duties as needed in support of the teaching, research and public events of the VR stage at the CA Center Broadway.
