We are seeking a Virtualization Systems Engineer SME to provide technical leadership for enterprise virtualization infrastructure supporting a mission-critical defense program in Oahu, Hawaii. This individual will serve as the senior authority for virtualization architecture, implementation, modernization, security compliance, and operational sustainment across classified and unclassified environments. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical expert with deep experience designing and managing secure, highly available virtualized environments within DoD or other federal environments.

Requirements

  • Active Top Secret clearance (SCI eligibility strongly preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in systems engineering or virtualization.
  • Deep expertise in: VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter VDI solutions (Horizon or equivalent) Storage integration (SAN/NAS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel) Virtual networking (vSwitches, distributed switches, NSX preferred) High availability (HA), DRS, clustering, and failover architectures
  • Experience supporting classified DoD environments.
  • Strong understanding of: RMF and ATO processes DISA STIGs Zero Trust principles Backup and disaster recovery solutions
  • US Citizenship Required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting INDOPACOM or Pacific defense operations.
  • Experience with hyperconverged platforms (e.g., Dell VxRail, Nutanix).
  • Familiarity with container platforms and virtualization convergence strategies.
  • Experience with automation and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Prior experience transitioning experimental or development environments into operational sustainment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available, secure virtualization platforms (compute, storage, and networking integration).
  • Develop long-term modernization roadmaps for virtualization and hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI).
  • Lead architectural reviews and ensure alignment with DoD reference architectures and cybersecurity mandates.
  • Oversee capacity planning, performance optimization, and lifecycle refresh strategies.
  • Lead administration of enterprise virtualization environments (VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, Horizon, or equivalent platforms).
  • Architect and manage virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions.
  • Provide technical direction to systems engineers and administrators.
  • Review and approve configuration changes, patching strategies, and upgrades.
  • Lead root cause analysis for critical outages or performance degradation.
  • Ensure compliance with DoD cybersecurity policies, STIG implementation, and Risk Management Framework (RMF) requirements.
  • Support ATO processes and audit readiness activities.
  • Implement secure configuration baselines and hardening procedures.
  • Support secure virtualization across classified environments (e.g., SIPR, JWICS, or equivalent).
  • Oversee day-to-day virtualization operations to ensure 24/7 mission availability.
  • Implement backup, disaster recovery, and continuity of operations (COOP) capabilities.
  • Coordinate maintenance windows and minimize operational disruption.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation.
