About The Position

The Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking a responsible and energetic team member to lead public outreach activities and provide a welcoming, engaging, and friendly experience for visitors. This position will be responsible for leading guided public tours and assisting with other hands-on public visitor engagement programs. Successful candidates will possess strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for introducing visitors to MBL research and making science accessible to the public. This position is temporary (Mid June/July – August). Hours may include occasional weekends.

Requirements

  • Must have highly engaging verbal communication skills and be comfortable speaking to groups of diverse backgrounds and ages.
  • Must be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and reliable.
  • Must be friendly, outgoing, be a team player, have a customer service orientation, and be adaptable to changing scenarios.
  • Basic computer experience, including experience with Microsoft Office, desirable to have, or be working on, a bachelor’s degree.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with the public, preferably in museum or educational settings, preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of local marine species and the Cape Cod marine environment is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Lead public educational tours that highlight MBL history, research, and the natural history of local marine species.
  • Assist with portable education stations on the MBL campus or waterfront (e.g., Visitor’s Center, Waterfront Park) during the annual Science Stroll, and assist in setup and breakdown.
  • Assist MBL Aquarists with marine animal exhibits within the MBL's Marine Resources Center and other outreach locations.
  • Work independently and effectively as a team member with other personnel to maintain a high professional standard.
  • Occasionally help staff with special events outside of the normal schedule.
