The Opportunity Tasks: Develops and executes a best-in-class external communications plan that enhances USAA’s reputation and positions the organization and its leaders within the global media landscape. Serves as communications adviser and strategist to the CEO, ensuring consistent messaging and content that reflects USAA’s priorities and brand values. Anticipates emerging issues and external risks, providing proactive, data-driven strategies to protect and strengthen USAA’s reputation. Oversees media relations, social media strategy, and crisis communications to ensure timely and effective engagement with external stakeholders. Act as a trusted advisor to senior executives on communications, corporate impact, and stakeholder engagement strategies. Directs creation of high-impact messaging and storytelling for diverse audiences, ensuring clarity and alignment with association objectives. Manages governance, ethics, compliance, budgeting, and agency relationships to ensure operational excellence. Builds strong relationships across internal and external stakeholder ecosystems to advance USAA’s strategy and drive growth. Maintains deep understanding of industry trends, regulatory landscape, and external market dynamics to inform strategic communications decisions. Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities. Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in corporate affairs, public affairs, or related field, with a proven record of shaping company reputation and driving strategic transformation.
  • 8 years of people leadership experience in building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams required.
  • Proven ability to counsel senior executives and navigate highly matrixed organizations.
  • Strong business acumen with ability to read P&L and align communications to company strategy.
  • Expertise in media relations, social media, crisis management, and reputation building.
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills for executive and external audiences.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to anticipate trends and develop long-range plans.
  • Demonstrated leadership, influence without authority, and ability to drive transformation.
