About The Position

Position Summary The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a vibrant, exciting, and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. The Observatory operates a variety of radio telescopes that span the globe, including the famous Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Very Large Baseline Array (VLBA) distributed across the United States and its territories, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. These telescopes are among the most advanced in the world, allowing astronomers to explore the universe in unprecedented detail. NRAO is recruiting a Warehouse and Property Control Supervisor to support the VLA warehouse operations, acquisition or disposal of excess government property, and the control of government property at the Observatory. Ensures accurate records and oversee shipments of NRAO property. Also, maintains records for company owned and leased motor vehicles. The position is based at the VLA, 50 miles west of Socorro, NM.

Requirements

  • You have a high school diploma or high school equivalency.
  • You have two years of related experience
  • Personal computer literacy & competence, office software tools (MS Office Suite), operation of material handling equipment, fixed asset inventory software (eQuip!), good oral and written communication skills; ability to work well with a wide variety of employees; must be well organized, must perform routine daily, weekly, monthly tasks on time and with reliability; must be detail oriented.

Responsibilities

  • Directs day-to-day warehouse operations, including supervision, training, and coordination of warehouse staff while establishing and maintaining documented procedures for receiving, storage, distribution, and inventory control.
  • Develops, documents, and continuously improves standardized warehouse and asset management processes to ensure consistency, compliance, and operational efficiency across NM Operations and VLBA sites.
  • Maintains accurate property records for NRAO fixed assets and vehicles within NM Operations and each VLBA site, ensuring documentation standards are current, complete, and audit-ready.
  • Performs and documents annual physical inventories of warehouse materials and fixed assets; reconciles discrepancies and maintains supporting records.
  • Conducts and verifies daily cycle counts, spot-checks physical inventory, and maintains written controls for inventory accuracy.
  • Maintains and improves bar-coded labeling systems and digital photo imaging of capital assets to ensure accurate tracking and traceability.
  • Oversees organization of warehouse space and the “boneyard” area, ensuring documented procedures exist for storage, disposal, recycling, and excess property handling.
  • Coordinates and documents the storage and tracking of excess furnishings and materials for future organizational use.
  • Acquires or disposes of excess property for NM Operations in accordance with documented procedures and applicable regulations.
  • Arranges shipment of NRAO property to and from NRAO and other locations, including heavyweight and dangerous goods cargo logistics, while maintaining required shipping documentation and regulatory compliance.
  • Pulls oversized load and weight permits for shipments and maintains appropriate records.
  • Requests insurance and Federal or State plates for newly acquired vehicles at DSOC, VLA, and VLBA sites; ensures vehicle records are accurate and complete.
  • Occasionally covers warehouse operations when staffing is limited and assists with receiving functions during high-volume periods.
  • Proactively complies with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures and incorporates safety standards into operational documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
