About The Position

Supervise and coordinate daily waste collection, recycling, and bulk collection operations utilizing automated and semi-automated vehicles across assigned service areas, overseeing up to 25 direct reports. The incumbent monitors work quality and productivity through regular field presence and directly engaging with assigned crews throughout the workday. Responsible for responding to, investigating, and resolving citizen service complaints in a timely and professional manner. Manages employee attendance, sick leave, and injury leave, including providing counseling or recommending disciplinary action when abuse is identified, and ensures accurate timekeeping and leave entry in the UKG timekeeping system. The incumbent promotes and enforces safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to on-the-job safety practices, and conducts safety meetings and training to reinforce these requirements. Investigates vehicle accidents, employee injuries, and property damage claims; documents findings; determines potential negligence; and makes appropriate recommendations. Incumbent may also participate in special projects and initiatives, including citywide and neighborhood cleanup efforts.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.). An Associate’s degree is preferred.
  • Must meet one of the following levels of experience listed below:
  • Three years of experience as an Equipment Operator II assigned to the Division of Waste Collection with the City of Dayton; OR
  • A total of five years of experience in any combination with the City of Dayton as an Equipment Operator II, Waste Collector, or Municipal Worker assigned to the Division of Waste Collection ; OR
  • Five years of experience as a supervisor in waste collection operations at a private or public entity.
  • Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
  • At time of appointment, must possess and maintain, as a term and condition of continued employment, a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.), including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio. Out of state residents must have equivalent licenses from their state of residence.
  • Must be a full-time permanent employee in a pay grade below S12, including pay grades 125 (Wage) or below, 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.
  • A background investigation is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment.
