About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Chief Mechanic, this position serves as a technician for a mechanical maintenance crew in the water facilities. Performs and directs the work of others in skilled and complex mechanical installations and repairs; oversees and maintains mechanical equipment at the water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and well fields; and occasionally assists other departments with their mechanical needs. Position must be available to work callbacks, evenings, weekends, holidays and during inclement weather. Position is considered weather essential personnel.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License for all positions.
  • The ability to install, maintain and/or extend mechanical systems throughout the various workgroups within the Utility.
  • Understanding of City of Amarillo lock Out Tag Out policy and 3(it takes 3 years at minimum to obtain class B Water or Wastewater license without a degree), years’ experience in a supervisory role and the ability to lead a crew independently.
  • Must also obtain a Class B Water or Wastewater License (Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Only).
  • Must also obtain a CDL.
  • All safety equipment necessary for safe work performance and to maintain a safe working environment. Including the ability to follow Lockout Tagout procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand tools, precision measurement tools, and other troubleshooting equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform necessary emergency repairs in stressful situation while doing so in safe and productive manner.
  • Ability to occasionally work around potentially hazardous chemicals and frequently work around and with moving equipment and potentially hazardous energy sources, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical, up to 4,160v under the supervision.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting in addition to working independently.
  • Knowledge and understanding of blueprints, specifications, schematics, O&M manuals.
  • Ability to operate Bucket Trucks, Front-end Loaders, Forklifts, and Skid Loaders.
  • Have knowledge of motor control systems operations, power systems operations, and lighting system
  • Proficiency with reading/writing for accurate communication and transference of information; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, including but not limited to Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Shall be able to climb ladders, stairs, perform work at elevated heights, and can stand on concrete for long periods of time.
  • Will be required to work in confined spaces such as vaults to perform repairs
  • Must be willing and able to work in environments where raw sewage is present
  • Required to climb overhead water storage tower 100ft to perform maintenance

Nice To Haves

  • A Texas CDL is preferred.
  • Experience in mechanical trade and/or industrial maintenance is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the scheduled preventative maintenance, unscheduled routine, and emergency installation, troubleshooting, and repair and correction of mechanical problems effecting the buildings and equipment in the water and wastewater facilities, as assigned.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspect stationary equipment such as: Water Treatment and Production-Pumps, Valves, Compressors, and fittings, chemical feed systems, chlorine systems and handling. Wastewater Treatment – Wastewater Pumps, Belt filter Presses, polymer system, chlorine distribution equipment, gas digesters, belt conveyance, blowers, equipment.
  • Performs scheduled, unscheduled and emergency installations and corrections of mechanical issues affecting the buildings and equipment in facilities, as assigned.
  • Works within the parameters of an overall work schedule and keeps their supervisor informed of any delays in the schedule caused by frequent unscheduled and/or emergency requests for his/her time.
  • Plans and implements various installations and daily repair projects, to include ordering parts, arranging for tools and equipment and coordinating the project with other work being done and with operational schedules.
  • Assists in keeping the necessary inventory levels of parts, supplies and tools required to properly install, troubleshoot.
  • Participates in asset management inventory and executes assigned work orders.
  • Maintains the written records relevant to this position, consisting of daily job and progress reports, upgrades to blueprints, ladder diagrams and schematics. Makes the recorded information available in central location for Utilities.
  • Occasionally, may assist other departments with their mechanical needs.
  • May act as lead mechanic and assists other personnel assigned to the mechanical maintenance crew with predictive and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical and control systems.
  • Plans and organizes mechanical projects to maximize efficient use of labor and materials.
  • Clean and maintain appearance of buildings, structures, and equipment.
  • Lead, Train, and evaluate apprentices.
  • Mechanic on ‘Call Duty’ on a fixed or rotating schedule as the plant sees fit.
  • Preform general welding, fabrication, and Pipeline work.
  • Emphasizes and provides safe working conditions for mechanical and non-mechanical personnel.
  • During the absence of their supervisor communicates with Utilities Maintenance Manager on mechanical projects at the treatment plants, well fields, and pump stations.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by their Assigned Supervisor. They must communicate with the operations staff daily and keep them informed of the status of mechanically powered equipment before during and after work is performed.
  • Must perform before and after use checks of vehicles and equipment.
  • Must wear and maintain all required personal protective equipment and perform safety evaluations for job sites including proper use of a lockout/tag out system.
