About The Position

Position Purpose: The Water Systems Operator III must have experience installing, maintaining, and repairing water mains, water services, pipes, pumps, wells; operate computer equipment, operate process equipment; operate, maintain and repair storage tanks and other water facilities; use tools and operate power-driven equipment necessary for the performance of the work; understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions; conduct work in a manner that is prompt and courteous, while maintaining good public relations; and supervise a small crew and/or work independently.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Recent, three years of progressive responsibility and experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and mechanical water production equipment, treatment, and distribution systems.
  • Methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation, installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, pipes, pumps, water wells, controls and equipment; safety precautions and procedures; basic plumbing and construction knowledge.
  • A valid California Class “C” driver’s license is required. Must maintain satisfactory DMV record and ability to maintain insurability.
  • Possession of a Grade III Water Distribution Certificate and possession of a Grade II Water Treatment Certificate State of California Department of Health Service is required.
  • Employee Orientation, Departmental Operating Procedures, Safety, OSHA and Quality Training.
  • HAZWOPER - Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Level I and II certification.
  • Forklift certification if required at site.
  • Highest level state certification for water/ treatment.
  • Water Distribution.
  • Team Leader / Supervisory Training.
  • Cross-training if feasible.

Responsibilities

  • Operates automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment including, wells, boosting pumps, engines, generators, valves and chemical feeds d to insure that the water treatment/ water distribution systems meet regulatory compliance standards required by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). Division of Drinking Water (DDW).
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance (PM’s) on all related water facilities by following the predetermined PM schedule.
  • Performs manual labor including cleaning equipment, facilities and grounds as required.
  • Performs minor maintenance including, but not limited to, routine preventive maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments.
  • Performs routine sampling requirements as required by SWRCB.
  • Notifies water field supervisor/ water operation supervisor of potential regulatory compliance concerns.
  • Follows the Veolia Process Control Management Plan to ensure all deliverables are performed as outlined in the PCMP plan.
  • Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process control units or alter unit processes.
  • Monitors process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.
  • Operates vehicles for plant operational purposes.
  • Practices good housekeeping in assigned area and properly disposes of waste according to safety and environmental policies.
  • Assists in other areas of plant as needed.
  • May assist with orienting or training new or less experienced Operators.
