Web Developer

Hook & Ladder
1dRemote

About The Position

You won’t just build websites, you’ll be the technical backbone of your scrum team and ensure everything that ships is fast, secure, and strategically sound. 💥 Hook & Ladder is a purpose-driven digital marketing agency scaling our web capabilities for multi-location restaurant and franchise brands across the US and Canada, and we need someone who can own the build, protect the quality, and connect business goals to what actually goes live. This role is for a confident, execution-obsessed Web Developer who’s ready to be the most technical person on their team. Someone who doesn’t wait for perfect specs, doesn’t need a senior developer above them, and takes pride in shipping work that performs, not just looks good. 🏠 Remote-First role (on-site occasionally.) 🌴 Flexible PTO and unlimited sick days (Yep, really.) 🔥 Tons of autonomy — We trust you to own outcomes, not just tasks. 🎯 Profit-sharing program — When you win, we win. 🚀 Built to Grow — This role expands as your leadership expands. We’re looking for a Mid–Senior Web Developer who is execution-driven, detail-oriented, and ready to own technical delivery inside a fast-paced agency environment. You’ll be the go-to technical expert on your scrum team, which means you must be autonomous, proactive, and comfortable making decisions. This is a hands-on role. You’ll be maintaining and building custom WordPress themes and plugins, creating pages from scratch or customizing templates using custom fields and builders like Elementor Pro or Divi, QA’ing work, troubleshooting complex issues, and collaborating closely with SEO, CRO, UX/UI, Ads, and PM teams to ensure every website we ship drives results. We want someone who cares about performance, scalability, security, automation, and continuous improvement, someone who understands that every website is a revenue driver, not just code.

Requirements

  • You have 3–5 years of hands-on web development experience (agency experience strongly preferred).
  • You have deep expertise in WordPress, including custom themes and plugin development.
  • You’re highly proficient in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/jQuery (7+/10), with working knowledge of PHP and MySQL.
  • You understand responsive design, accessibility, cross-browser compatibility, and performance optimization.
  • You’ve optimized Core Web Vitals and know how to implement caching, minification, image optimization, and CDN best practices.
  • You care about website security — SSL, updates, best practices are non-negotiable.
  • You don’t need someone more technical to unblock you. You figure things out.
  • You think beyond code — you understand business goals and why the site exists.
  • You’re curious about AI, automation, and modern tools that increase leverage.
  • You have strong English communication skills (C1+).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multi-location or franchise brands (QSR, retail, hospitality).
  • CRO or experimentation tools (VWO, Hotjar, etc.).
  • Familiarity with GTM and GA4 implementation.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Spanish or French proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Website Development & Technical Execution: Own the full website build cycle, from custom WordPress theme/plugin development to page builds and integrations. Ensure every site meets high standards for responsiveness, accessibility, cross-browser compatibility, performance (Core Web Vitals), and security.
  • Quality Assurance & Technical Oversight: Act as the quality gatekeeper. QA your own work and others’. Test across devices and browsers. Catch the details others miss. Our reputation depends on it.
  • Problem-Solving & Debugging: Diagnose and resolve complex WordPress issues independently, plugin conflicts, performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities. Anticipate risks before they impact timelines or clients.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Business Translation: Work closely with SEO, CRO, UX/UI, Ads, and PM teams to integrate strategy into every build. Translate business requirements into technical solutions and clearly explain trade-offs to non-technical teammates.
  • Innovation, Automation & Continuous Improvement: Stay current with web technologies and best practices. Leverage tools like n8n, Zapier, APIs, and AI to improve workflows, speed, and quality. Contribute to documentation, coding standards, and process improvements.

Benefits

  • Flexible PTO and unlimited sick days
  • Profit-sharing program
  • Tons of autonomy
  • Built to Grow
