About The Position

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. State Troopers are committed to protecting North Carolina's motoring public. The NC State of Highway Patrol is seeking a Weigh Station Operator to play a critical role in promoting highway safety by inspecting commercial vehicles credentials and enforcing transportation regulations for both state and federal laws.

Requirements

  • Internal State Government Posting – Only current permanent and temporary NC State Government and/or University employees or layoff candidates with the State of North Carolina eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by G.S. 126 may apply.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of work experience in dealing with the public, which requires the use of some basic mathematical skills.
  • Must successfully complete the Weigh Station Operator Basic School and Field Training Program within one year of hire.

  • Working knowledge of the reciprocal agreements with other states regarding vehicle weight and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Use of automated scales and Weigh In Motion (WIM) scales to determine the weights of commercial motor vehicles and their cargo.
  • Utilize measuring devices to calculate axle weight, axle grouping, height, license, and permit weight of those vehicles to detect violations.
  • Utilize State Bridge charts to check for the weight violations and using the FuelTaCS systems to issue civil penalties for over axle, axle grouping, registration, fuel tax, insurance, and permit violations.
  • Check vehicles for compliance and/or violations of the International Fuel Tax, International Registration Plan issuing temporary permits, citations and receipts.
  • Use the reciprocity manual to determine tolerance and registration requirements for out-of-state vehicles.
  • Contact out of state agencies for license, registration and escort information.
  • Monitor commercial vehicles for erratic driving.
  • Responding to incoming calls, accurately documenting messages, maintaining detailed records, and preparing reports on all vehicles checked weighed and accessed.
  • Explain federal, local and weigh laws to the public.
  • Operating a variety of office and inspection equipment to include but not limited to computes, base radio, fax machine, telephone, calculator, credit card machine, RID, NCPass system, Truck Counter and Radiation portal.
