About The Position

This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by providing safe and effective patient care by performing tasks and support functions under the supervision of a Licensed Nurse. The Wound Center Assistant/Patient Care Tech will also provide assistance with answering phones, greeting patients, scheduling appointments, and other duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in computer and phone operations, as well as medical terminology.
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Must have ONE of the following: completion of a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) or Health Support Professional program a minimum of 2 years in a Bachelor's in Nursing Degree program one year in an ADN program comparable education, training and experience in the absence of successful completion of a CNA or Health Support Professional program
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.

  • Previous patient care tech experience and/or medical office experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answers phones, greets patients, returns phones calls, schedules appointments, scans documents, ensures patient information is entered and accurate, and assists with work que as delegated by Wound Center Assistant.
  • Collects and records patient data within scope of practice (vitals signs, I&O, telephone calls, observation notes).
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living and personal care/hygiene and responds to patient requests for assistance.
  • Assists nursing staff with patient care needs.
  • Obtains vitals signs, and settles patients by offering drinks and warm blankets.
  • Assists nurses with patient care as needed, such as holding a limb or assisting with dressing changes per scope of practice.
  • Effectively communicates with team when requested needs cannot be immediately met.
  • Assists Hyperbaric Nurse with patient needs (blood glucose, vital signs, dressing, bathroom needs, transfers) and clean hyperbaric oxygen chambers with nurses' supervision and direction.
  • Cleans rooms after each patient use and stocks rooms.
  • Schedules patients for treatments based on referral work que and prepares schedule for the next day on white board(s).
  • Helps prepare clinic for anticipated needs.
  • Utilizes Patient Care Tech template to help prioritize needs and duties.
  • Helps close unit at the end of the shift if needed and available.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
