POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Fitness & Sports Instructor is responsible for the general operations of the Wellness Center and youth/adult sports programs, including assigned maintenance and cleaning, member relations, policy enforcement, and safety monitoring. Actively assists, orients, and engages members. Promotes a professional image. Maintains a clean and safe environment. Also demonstrates a commitment to the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Requirements

  • Has 2+ years of experience/education in the Health & Wellness and/or Sports field.
  • Must understand the basic components of program curriculum.
  • Must have an understanding of sport principles for youth, teens, and adults; introductory skills to sports activities; and an understanding of safety aspects of sports programming.
  • Must obtain First Aid, CPR/AED certification within 90 days
  • Must complete Y required trainings including Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, One Y One voice, and Blood-borne pathogens
  • Possess an outgoing and enthusiastic personality.
  • All Y associates agree to abide by The Code of Conduct with Youth that sets clear expectations for associates and volunteers to ensure a safe and respectful environment for young people. It emphasizes treating youth with respect and fairness, avoiding inappropriate physical or verbal interactions, and adhering to established standards of affection. The policy strictly prohibits any form of abuse, bullying, or harassment and mandates the reporting of suspected mistreatment. Additionally, associates and volunteers must complete training on child abuse prevention and comply with legal reporting requirements to safeguard youth.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a courteous, caring, and professional demeanor at all times when working with members, program participants, or other staff.
  • Reports to work in assigned department uniform and must wear nametag at all times.
  • Greets all members and program participants in a professional and friendly manner, using their names whenever possible.
  • Develops and demonstrates safe, age, and skill level appropriate lessons plans for sports programs. Adapts lessons plans as needed to work with the learning level of the class.
  • Effectively communicates with and motivates participants
  • Identifies unsafe or hazardous exercise or sports activities and makes corrections or suggests alternatives.
  • Enforces all posted guidelines and policies in the Fitness Center and Sports fields and gym.
  • Reports to class with prepared lesson plans and equipment prepared to start the lesson on time. Returns all equipment to proper storage location at the end of the lesson. Records and keeps class attendance records.
  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings for Sports Instructors. Maintains required certifications and attends in-service trainings as applicable.
  • Reports to work in sufficient time to receive communications and instructors from supervisor or previous staff and read any posted information prior to assigned shift. In the event of a necessary absence, locates substitute and notifies supervisor of change. If unable to secure coverage, you are responsible to complete your scheduled shift.
  • Assists in participant recruitment or program promotions.
  • Works to ensure a Net Promoter Score of 60% or higher.
