About The Position

Youth Development Trainer The Youth Development Trainer strengthens the quality and consistency of YMCA school-age care programs by building the skills, confidence, and effectiveness of program directors and site leaders. This role focuses on peer coaching, hands-on training, and practical teaching. The Trainer works alongside directors in real program environments to help them lead teams well, manage operations confidently, and deliver safe, engaging, high-quality experiences for children. Key Responsibilities: Peer Coaching & Director Support: Serve as a peer coach to the Youth Development Directors, providing regular, structured coaching that is practical, supportive, and accountability-driven Observe programs in action and provide timely, constructive feedback focused on leadership behaviors, staff supervision, and program quality Help directors problem-solve real challenges such as staff performance, parent communication, behavior management, and daily operations Build trust and credibility with directors by modeling YMCA values and effective leadership practices. Training & Professional Development: Design and deliver training for Youth Development Directors and site leaders that is engaging, relevant, and immediately applicable. Teach core competencies, including staff onboarding, coaching and feedback, schedule management, child behavior guidance, and program planning Support directors in developing their own leadership and coaching skills so they can effectively train and retain their teams Reinforce best practices and compliance standards in youth development, safety, and inclusive programming Program Quality & Consistency: Promote consistent implementation of YMCA standards Support continuous improvement efforts through coaching cycles, follow-up visits, and progress tracking Serve as a resource and thought partner for directors and leadership on youth development and school-age care operations

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, Youth Development, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in School-Age Care, youth development, or out-of-school time programming.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, or training staff or leaders.
  • Strong working knowledge of school-age child development and program management.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to give clear, honest, and supportive feedback.
  • Ability to travel regularly between program sites.
  • Virginia Department of Education licensing qualifications for a program director satisfied.
