About The Position

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale. The Role The Zone Manufacturing Engineer – GA Execution is responsible for leading the development and installation of manufacturing processes, equipment, and tooling within a defined zone in General Assembly (GA). This role owns the integration, installation, validation, and ramp-up to steady-state production for new programs, model changes, and current production, ensuring safe, high-quality, and efficient execution. Work is performed in both a centralized manufacturing engineering environment and at the assembly plant, requiring a high level of independent judgment, cross-functional collaboration, and strong launch leadership.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing launch processes, preferably in General Assembly.
  • 5+ years of experience in GA tooling and equipment execution (design, integration, installation, and launch).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in process engineering disciplines specific to GA (workstation design, tooling, ergonomics, material flow, quality, and throughput).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Proven track record of leading launch activities in a plant or execution environment, including issue resolution and cross-functional coordination.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety, quality, and compliance during program launches.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ambiguous launch environment, managing multiple priorities and stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel up to 75%.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with AutoDesk CAD for reviewing or developing tooling and layout concepts.
  • Experience with Teamcenter Visualization or similar tools for product and process visualization.
  • Knowledge of Global Launch Process and Vehicle Development Process.
  • Experience implementing and sustaining GMS principles (or similar lean manufacturing systems).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams (engineering, operations, quality, suppliers) through launch milestones.
  • Experience developing zone-level integration plans, including equipment phasing, install plans, and pull-ahead strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all new programs, model changes, and current production execution for an assigned GA zone.
  • Define all product and manufacturing changes, including tooling, workstation layout, facilities, material flow, and automation requirements.
  • Own the zone execution plan, ensuring tooling, conveyor, material, and automation needs are met per launch timing.
  • Develop and maintain tooling Statements of Requirements (SORs) and support MPS study cost development with MSIE and Process teams.
  • Lead or coordinate equipment design, build, integration, plant installation, and validation to achieve flawless launches.
  • Provide technical direction to suppliers and contractors, including oversight of build, debug, and installation phases.
  • Support plant build events, address launch issues, and drive timely issue resolution (math, build, test).
  • Ensure effective material flow and interfaces (conveyance, tooling, automation, facilities) across the department and adjacent groups.
  • Champion safety and ergonomics, including participation in/leadership of Safety Observation Tours and ensuring compliance in all process and tooling designs.
  • Participate in Program financials, including spending forecasts and adherence to budget for tooling and equipment.
  • Lead or support weekly zone integration planning meetings (install requirements, phasing, pull-ahead plans, conveyance interfaces, etc.) to align all stakeholders.
  • Ensure on-time completion of all ME deliverables to support a flawless launch and stable production.
  • Drive continuous improvement of equipment, tools, and processes in the zone post-launch.
  • Provide coaching and day-to-day guidance to other engineers and contractors supporting the zone; may mentor junior engineers.
  • Work may involve some weekends, off-shift support, and extensive travel at times to suppliers and/or launch locations.
