About The Position

The University of Pennsylvania’s Holman Biotech Commons (HBC) seeks a creative and talented 3D Fabrication Manager to lead our 3D modeling, design, and printing services. This position, reporting to the HBC Director, offers cutting-edge 3D fabrication services to the Penn community to advance innovation in support of teaching, learning, research, and clinical practice at the University. Current fabrication services include 3D printing and laser cutting –and a peer position oversees a separate poster printing service. The 3D fabrication manager offers 3D modeling & fabrication consultations and workshops at the Bollinger Digital Fabrication Lab (which is located within the HBC); manages the day-to-day operations of the lab; sets policies and recommends expanded services; hires, trains, and supervises part-time staff (student workers); and ensures the equipment’s smooth operation by implementing troubleshooting and maintenance. The 3D fabrication manager monitors trends in fabrication software and hardware. The 3D fabrication manager collaborates with colleagues across the Penn Libraries and the University who share interest and responsibilities related to 3D visualization and fabrication technologies and services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of CAD, 3D modeling/design software and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • 2+ years experience in operating and maintaining at least two of the following types of commercial or consumer level 3D printers: Stereolithography (SLA), Digital Light Processing (DLP), Fused deposition modeling (FDM), polyjet, selective laser sintering (SLS), Powder/binder-based, etc.
  • Related experience with the repair and maintenance of 3D printers using vendor service contracts.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented documentation skills to track 3D printer usage.
  • This position includes the manipulation of 3D printed parts and the inventory of materials to support 3D printed materials.
  • Candidates must be able to carry out physical requirements of lifting and carrying up to 30lbs, loading and unloading 3D printer trays, as well as clean 3D printed parts.
  • Comfortable providing design consultations and workshops.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Experience supervising others, operating laser cutters, and machine shop skills.

Responsibilities

  • Set policies and recommend expanded 3D printing services to strategically align with University priorities.
  • Update or innovate workflows for fabrication processes as needed.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student workers to process patron fabrication requests.
  • Create and update training documentation.
  • Process fabrication requests including reviewing files, validating printability, communicating with patrons, post processing of 3D printed or laser-cut parts.
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and/or coordinate manufacturer’s repairs.
  • Provide consultations in 3D modeling and digital fabrication techniques for faculty, students, researchers, and clinicians at the Holman Biotech. Commons.
  • Teach workshops on fabrication techniques for the wider University community.
  • Track all services rendered and prepare reports for administrative staff; contribute stories of notable projects for strategic communications channels.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Penn Libraries and the University who share interest and responsibilities related to digital fabrication technologies and services.
  • Monitor trends in 3D design & fabrication, software and hardware, to execute changes in the services provided.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
