About The Position

The Education Department at Daemen University is seeking a qualified adjunct instructor for a course in undergraduate education programs. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching EDU 213: Foundations of Education, with oversight by the Chair of the Education Department for curriculum alignment and certification requirements. Joining our Education team, the Adjunct Faculty will be responsible for the following: 1) to provide an overview of the historical, philosophical, curricular, and sociological foundations upon which pedagogical practice in the United States rests; 2) to analyze education as a social institution; 3) to discuss contemporary educational issues from an historical perspective; and 4) to discuss educational statutes, legislation, and judicial decisions as they pertain to classroom teachers. $3,000 per semester By the end of the semester, students will describe and discuss: historical, social, and philosophical foundations of education, including how systems have changed over time global perspectives on education structures and philosophies teacher roles and responsibilities (e.g., educational equity/social justice, appropriate education, confidentiality, mandated reporting, keeping students safe and free from bullying and abuse, creating and maintaining a safe learning environment, preventing school violence, etc.) important dispositions of the profession, both as a teacher and a learner the increase in diversity of learners and their families in our schools today the impact of culture, heritage, SES, personal health and safety, nutrition, abuse/danger, home and community factors on students' readiness to learn the importance of productive relationships and interactions among the school, home, and community for enhancing student learning the importance of working within a collaborative learning community using best practices the importance of all facets of learning and growth within sociocultural contexts, including cognitive, social, emotional, and linguistic individual philosophies of education, which will culminate in a written personal philosophy of education

Requirements

  • NYS teacher certification (any area)
  • At least three years teaching experience in Grades PK-12 or similar relevant experience
  • Expertise in (a) historical and social foundations of education and how systems have changed over time; (b) teacher rights, roles, and responsibilities; and (c) educational philosophers and their impact on how we approach teaching in the U.S. and around the world

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience in higher education/teacher preparation
  • NYS teacher certification in Students with Disabilities (any grades)
