About The Position

As an Advocacy Specialist, this role will play a key part in advancing our mission by supporting advocacy assistance, grassroots organizing and outreach and education. Daily tasks include updating and maintaining databases and advocacy trackers, attending community and coalition meetings as a Regional Food Bank representative, coordinating logistics for advocacy events and campaigns and providing staff support for the Policy Advisory Committee. Through grassroots organizing, the role will oversee the Magnify Oklahoma neighbor engagement program and gather stories that highlight the lived experiences of Oklahomans facing hunger, helping to contextualize data for policymakers. The position will also utilize data and analytics to inform decisions and continuously improve advocacy efforts. By empowering community members and partner agencies to advocate for hunger prevention policies, the specialist will help create lasting change within our community.

Requirements

  • Earning a master’s degree in social work or gaining at least 6 years of relevant experience in the field or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Working for at least 2-4 years with grassroots organizing, advocacy, communications, social work and/or legislative activity.
  • Proficiency in common office applications, spreadsheets and database software (e.g., Microsoft Office, CRM systems).
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines with proven attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets organizational standards.
  • Commitment to advancing the mission of ending hunger.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Ability to complete a background check, motor vehicle record review, drug screening and physical assessment as required for the role.
  • This position is classified as Safety Sensitive under Oklahoma law. Employees in safety-sensitive roles perform duties where even a momentary lapse in concentration could result in injury to themselves, others or cause environmental harm. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is not permitted to hire applicants who hold a medical marijuana card for safety-sensitive positions, in compliance with state law.

Responsibilities

  • Advocacy Assistance Update and maintain databases and advocacy trackers.
  • Attend community and/or coalition meetings and serve as a representative of the Regional Food Bank.
  • Coordinate logistics and assist in planning for advocacy events, campaigns and initiatives (including but not limited to: Hunger Action Month, Feeding Across the Aisle, Anti-Hunger Day at the Capitol).
  • Provide staff assistance for the Regional Food Bank’s Policy Advisory Committee
  • Oversee neighbor engagement program, Magnify Oklahoma, to uplift neighbor’s experiences with food insecurity.
  • Gather stories that amplify the lived experiences of Oklahomans facing hunger and contextualize datapoints for elected officials and stakeholders when weighing policy options that impact their constituents.
  • Use data and analytics to inform decision-making and continuously improve advocacy efforts.
  • Develop and distribute messaging and materials to educate the public and raise awareness of the organization’s policy priorities.
  • Build relationships to bring in coalition partners to help advance hunger education and alleviation activities.
  • Participate in coalition meetings and stay up to date on state level current issues.
  • Promote hunger prevention education and partnership efforts internally and externally.
  • Partner across the organization to educate and build relationships with partners, volunteers, donors and community heads.
  • Assist community-based partner agencies in enhancing and updating hunger education and action strategies.
  • Schedule and facilitate in-person and distance learning educational programs for various audiences, including Regional Food Bank employees, partner agencies, community organizations, civic groups, corporations and volunteers.
  • Maintain and update program curriculum and outreach materials.
  • Train and coach staff to deliver hunger education programming as needed.
