About The Position

This position assists licensed anesthesia providers in the acquisition, preparation, and application of the equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. In this role, the Anesthesia Technician contributes to safe, efficient, and cost-effective anesthesia care. The Anesthesia Technician provides support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases by preparing and maintaining patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during, and after anesthesia. The Anesthesia Technician will be required to fully understand the purpose and operation of Perioperative Services along with having the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates. This is a full-time position working Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:30pm.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of purpose, use, and care of physiological monitors relating to the administration of anesthesia.
  • Demonstrates competency of biological hazards, infection control, and standard precautions.
  • Demonstrates competency of fire, electrical, laser, and explosion hazards in the operating room and other anesthesia‑related areas.
  • Demonstrates competency of storage, use, and safe handling of bulk and cylinder gases.
  • Demonstrates competency of structure, function, and care of all components of anesthesia delivery systems.
  • Demonstrates competency of sterile technique and principles of aseptic practice.
  • Demonstrates competency of usage of common anesthetic gases.
  • Demonstrates competency of type and indications for local, monitored anesthesia care, regional, and general anesthesia.
  • Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction, when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate. Performs actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercises safe judgment in decision-making. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Demonstrates competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (HCP) level to be completed within one (1) month of hire.
  • Frequent and at times prolonged standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Heavy physical effort, ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Good body mechanics.
  • Good reading eyesight.
  • Able to see clearly 20 feet or more, to judge distance and space relationships, and to see peripherally.
  • Full visual acuity, color perception.
  • Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates of Arts Degree in a healthcare field preferred
  • Two (2) years of experience as an Anesthesia Assistant or related role, or a combination of education and experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists licensed anesthesia providers in the acquisition, preparation, and application of equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia.
  • Performs duties under the direct supervision of a licensed anesthesia provider and/or registered nurse.
  • Handles and organizes non-scheduled anesthesia medication in preparation of the surgery.
  • Transports sealed, pre-packaged procedure trays that contain sharps and non-narcotic medications for the purpose of stocking rooms in the department.
  • Prepares and sets up IV lines.
  • Assists anesthesia providers in monitoring and recording data in the application of cardiac monitoring, pulse oximetry, BP devices and other equipment in critical/non-critical situations.
  • Prepares and assists with line placement, CVP, invasive devices, arterial lines and others as directed by anesthesia provider.
  • Prepares and assists with general/regional/local anesthesia procedures.
  • Assists with fiberoptic intubation.
  • Performs first level maintenance on anesthesia equipment.
  • Cleans, sterilizes, assembles, calibrates and tests, requisition and records inspections and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assists medical staff with technical problems related to the delivery of anesthesia to patients, including setting up monitors and troubleshooting monitor malfunctions.
  • Operates a variety of mechanical, pneumatic and electronic equipment used to monitor, evaluate and manage the patient undergoing anesthesia.
  • Provides support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases.
  • Reviews literature to maintain current knowledge of equipment failure, recalls, warnings and other relevant information and provides ongoing in service of unit staff, anesthesiologist, CRNAs and others regarding equipment, techniques and materials/resources.
  • Contributes to safe, efficient and cost-effective anesthesia care.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures as well as labor agreements.
  • Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  • Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.
