About The Position

We are seeking a Construction Superintendent to join our grading and excavation operations. As the strategic link between the office and the field, you won't just be "watching dirt move"—you will be the technical authority on-site, ensuring that the project meets precise engineering standards and is efficiently operating with material, labor, equipment and subcontractors. PLM has over 120 employees, and this position would work with a minimum of three (3) excavating and two (2) grading crews on a daily basis partnering with our Concrete and Asphalt Superintendents to deliver high quality pavements to our loyal and expanding customer base. PLM provides maintenance, rehabilitation and construction of asphalt and concrete parking lots with supporting site work, grading and excavation. The ideal candidate possesses a deep mastery of grade setting and construction staking, paired with the leadership grit required to manage multiple field foremen and a complex heavy equipment fleet.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7–10 years in heavy civil construction, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role (minimum level: Foreman) specifically focused on grading and excavation.
  • Expert-level ability to read and interpret site plans, topographical maps, and cross-sections.
  • Proficiency grade setting using lasers is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills to bridge the gap between "boots on the ground" and management.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (CDL A preferred).

Nice To Haves

  • Additional understanding of concrete and asphalt pavement is preferred.
  • Understanding of GPS and rovers from a growth perspective is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Directly oversee or perform construction staking and verify control points.
  • Translate blueprints into physical reality with 100% accuracy.
  • Establish and maintain grades for mass excavation, embankments, and fine grading.
  • Ensure all field operations adhere to the specified slope requirements and drainage profiles.
  • Provide daily clear objectives to foremen, ensuring crews are optimized and safety protocols are non-negotiable.
  • Assist the Project Manager and Dispatcher in the strategic movement of heavy equipment and materials to eliminate downtime.
  • Monitor daily material quantities against the project budget to ensure the job stays "in the black."
  • Mentor and find training opportunities for field staff on labor, trucking and equipment operations.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, utility companies, and third-party inspectors.
  • Conduct daily "Tailgate" safety meetings and maintain detailed daily logs of site activities, weather conditions, and delays.
  • Operate and perform physical work as necessary to maintain project requirements.
