About The Position

Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) SSRAA’s mission is to enhance and rehabilitate salmon production in southern Southeast Alaska to the optimum social and economic benefit of salmon users. SSRAA is recruiting for a assistant hatchery manager at the Klawock River Hatchery, located at mile post 9 Klawock-Hollis Highway, Klawock, Alaska. The Klawock River Hatchery program is a coho facility with incubation and adult spawning at the main hatchery campus and rearing occurs on Klawock Lake in netpens. This position provides an onsite furnished house at a subsidized rental rate. The Assistant Manager will be part of a management team that includes a hatchery manager and maintenance supervisor. The Assistant Hatchery Manager trains and mentors staff in salmon culture techniques and procedures while supporting project planning, budgeting, data entry, and supply management. This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with staff, vendors, and contractors. In the Hatchery Manager’s absence, the Assistant Manager assumes full responsibility for all operations. The role also serves as the hatchery safety officer, leading training sessions and ensuring compliance with SSRAA policies and procedures. Applicants must have at least an associate degree in fisheries or a related field, two years of hatchery experience with supervisory responsibilities, and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. A valid Alaska driver’s license is required, and all applicants may undergo a background check. Preferred qualifications include experience in Pacific salmon culture, maintenance skills (carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical), and knowledge of local fisheries issues. Candidates must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs., work long hours in challenging weather, and thrive in a remote team environment. Summary of Position: The assistant manager coordinates and supervises the day to day operations at the hatchery while assisting the manager with the overall operation of the facility.

Requirements

  • Minimum associates degree in fisheries or related field.
  • Two years hatchery work experience to include significant time in a supervisory role.
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to maintain a good attitude while working long hours in wet cold and dark conditions.
  • A valid Alaska Driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Work history in Pacific Salmon culture.
  • Maintenance background a plus including carpentry, welding, plumbing and electrical.
  • Knowledge of local area and fisheries related issues will be beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Daily scheduling, coordinating, and supervision of staff.
  • Have full knowledge of all aspects of salmon culture techniques and all operating procedures of the hatchery.
  • Have the ability to confidently train an employee in those procedure and techniques.
  • Coordinate with the hatchery manager on all aspects of the hatchery operation to include project planning and hatchery improvement, data entry, budget tracking and supply ordering, employee evaluation and development.
  • Assume the full role and responsibilities of the hatchery manager in his or her absence.
  • Act as hatchery safety officer, administering quarterly safety meetings, maintaining safety supplies and equipment on site, and setting up training sessions when needed.
  • Follow and enforce SSRAA policies, being able to understand and interpret them for the hatchery staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
