Under supervision of a Deputy General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice to management with regard to various areas of assigned specialization. The Associate General Counsel has clear authority in the specialized area to act for the company. The Associate General Counsel develops and maintains internal relationships and provides coordination with outside counsel when necessary. The Associate General Counsel shall consult with a Deputy General Counsel when issues are significant with regard to impact on the company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree is required.
  • Requires two years of experience in the practice of law in a corporate legal department or a full service law firm with an emphasis in litigation and/or insurance regulatory law.
  • Active NJ Bar Admission or eligibility to obtain limited license for in-house counsel required.
  • Requires strong writing skills.
  • Requires strong verbal communication skills
  • Requires ability to relate effectively with all levels of personnel within the company.
  • Horizon BCBSNJ employees must live in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut or Delaware

Responsibilities

  • Provides advice to management on legal issues relating to insurance regulatory law for the Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement lines of business.
  • Supports the Sales and Broker Operations teams regarding Medicare regulations specific to the Government Programs lines of business.
  • Handles legal inquiries from within the company. Responds with legal opinion as appropriate.
  • Serves on various internal committees as both participant and counsel.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the laws, regulations and policies that pertain to the organizational unit's business and conforms with these laws, regulations and policies in carrying out the accountabilities of the job.
