About The Position

Under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Golf Course Mechanic or the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, the Assistant Golf Course Mechanic assists and/or works independently of the Golf Course Mechanic in the repairing and maintenance of various gasoline and diesel powered golf course maintenance equipment, assists in the implementation of a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for the golf course equipment, assists in the training of employees in the proper and safe use and maintenance of the golf course equipment, assists with maintaining a safe working environment in the maintenance building and on the course, assists in maintaining a clean and safe service area and maintenance building. This job description does not list all of the duties of this position. You may be instructed by management to perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Have a 2 year degree, certificate or equivalent training in Automotive Technology or related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in equipment repair and maintenance.
  • 1-2 years of golf course equipment maintenance experience.
  • 2-3 years of experience in employee training.
  • Working knowledge of light and heavy construction and maintenance equipment and of automotive apparatus.
  • Skill in the use of a wide variety of equipment repair tools and in the making of various types of mechanical repairs.
  • Knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, and mower grinding, sharpening and adjustment.
  • Experience in welding and fabrication.
  • Ability to diagnose and make repairs on gas, diesel and small engines.
  • Ability to train employees on the safe use of golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to operate light motorized and power equipment needed to complete required tasks.
  • Ability to organize and to cooperatively interact with course staff.
  • Knowledge of the game of golf.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid work permit.
  • Available and willing to work nights, weekends and holidays as required.
  • Requires the ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discrimination in sound.
  • Requires verbally expressing or exchanging ideas of important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Occasionally requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm.
  • Occasionally requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Occasionally requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time.
  • Occasionally requires ascending or descending slopes using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Occasionally requires raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires stooping, bending, crouching or squatting, which entails the use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in making mechanical repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment
  • Assists in keeping records and maintains inventory of needed parts to maintain each piece of equipment.
  • Properly communicates any needs or problems relating to repair or maintenance of the equipment to the Golf Course Mechanic and/or Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Assists in training staff in the safe operation of equipment, including pre and post operation procedures.
  • Assists in keeping all equipment in efficient, operable condition at all times.
  • Assists with organizing and maintaining a clean service area, operations building, and fuel storage area.
  • Performs additional golf course related tasks as required.
  • Inspects, adjusts, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects on all types of golf course equipment.
  • Performs mower grinding and sharpening.
  • Assists with the general overhaul of engines.
  • Assists with the repairs of transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, and high-pressure pumps and valves.
  • Assists with the installation and adjustment of brakes.
  • Assists with the installation of batteries, tires, wiring and glass.
  • Assists with machining or welding work in making fittings used in automotive equipment.
  • Performs occasional automotive painting or body and fender repair work.
  • Helps maintain records of preventive maintenance schedules and needs, repairs made, purchase orders, parts inventory, fuel and lubricant usage, and time worked.
  • Responsible for maintaining a good attendance record.
  • May be required to be a panelist for the Internal Review Hearings.
