About The Position

The Barns Associate supports stockyard operations with a primary focus on animal movement, humane handling, effective euthanasia, and compliance with STF programs and procedures. Responsibilities include monitoring livestock barn and staging staff, reporting non-compliance to management, and performing additional tasks as assigned. This role involves working in varying temperatures and environments. Primary duties include handling swine, assessing animal behavior, movement, feeding, storage, recordkeeping, and visual health assessments. The Barns Associate must document information, prepare concise reports when issues arise, and interact professionally with USDA FSIS officials and STF leadership.

  • Demonstrate the ability to stay focused on tasks as they are detail oriented.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and meet all specified deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language and procedure manuals.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with individual employees as well as groups.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and analyze steps within processes.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Work well individually and as a team.
  • Computer skills required with the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available. (ie. I-Pad)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the humane movement of market hogs into and out of barn pens, staging areas, and butinas.
  • Maintain lot identity until hogs are sent to harvest.
  • Collaborate with USDA to ensure all hogs sent to harvest have been inspected.
  • Ensure compliance with STF humane handling policies from unloading through staging.
  • Assist in segregating and euthanizing non-ambulatory or injured hogs.
  • Operate mechanical equipment to transport non-ambulatory hogs.
  • Maintain barn atmosphere and facilities.
  • Implement and adhere to segregation requirements.
  • Conduct sampling per STF procedures and communicate results to relevant parties.
  • Supervise daily activities of staging staff.
  • Coordinate work schedules.
  • Administer HR policies and procedures at the supervisor level.
  • Oversee training of livestock staff, including initial and ongoing training on STF humane handling policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and ensure compliance with the clean-up and sanitation procedures for the livestock area.
  • Complete all required audit forms.
  • Maintain the facilities and equipment in good working condition; notify maintenance personnel of any needed repairs.
  • Supervise or complete other tasks as directed by the Livestock Superintendent.
  • Maintain LOTO certification at an authorized level.
