About The Position

Ensure the safety and integrity of Stakes Race Horse(s) while housed in specified barns prior to their race post time. Serves as a middle staffer between the horse and any authorized or unauthorized persons in the barn area.

Requirements

• Possess and demonstrate good communication (both written and verbal and interaction skills. Be respectful of the employees and trainers in your assigned barn.
• Must be available for work each day of the race meet and be at their horse barn assignment on time.
• Applicants must successfully complete an interview structured to evaluate their general knowledge and abilities to perform barn security including, but not limited to, their decision making abilities and general barn etiquette.
• Be prepared and able to dress appropriately for inclement weather conditions including rain, wind, snow, etc.
• Ability to nicely but firmly communicate security rules and policies to patrons, owners, or friends of employees in the barn areas regarding horse visitation and remaining outside the retaining wall
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as rules and regulations of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, procedures, and safety rules.
• Ability to write and complete daily observation horse barn security report in an accurate manner.
• Ability to speak effectively before co-workers, trainers, and barn personnel.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions.
• Ability to deal with incidents/concerns involving trainers, barn employees, and patrons in barn areas.
• Must be able to exercise de-escalation methods during conflict.
• Must possess, or be able to attain, a Kentucky Horse Racing Commission License.

Nice To Haves

• General knowledge of Thoroughbred Racing, and Pedigrees is also preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and verify authorized and (current year) licensed trainer, groom(s) that will be working in and around the stall of assigned stakes racehorse(s).
• Remain within sight of horses at all times to ensure they are not left unattended.
• Observe and notify security supervision of any suspicious activity; utilize best judgment and err on side of caution if unsure how to handle a specific situation.
• Observe and record daily activities regarding assigned Stakes Race Horse including: Name of person entering and exiting the horse’s stall Details of tasks being performed (i.e. grooming, mucking stall, wrapping legs, applying ice boots, equipment, etc.) and times in and out of stall.
• Document each time an authorized groom/trainer enters stall.
• Redirect any person not authorized to enter a horse’s stall and notify supervision should this issue occur.
• Perform other duties within the Security Department as assigned such as parking, traffic, Grandstand, or gate duty.
