About The Position

The Body Shop Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the visual appearance and structural integrity of the agency’s fleet, including support vehicles, paratransit, microtransit, and fixed-route buses. This position specializes in the installation, repair, removal, and maintenance of vehicle graphics, advertising wraps, decals, branding elements, and interior marketing materials (including interior advertising, passenger announcements, and promotional displays). When wrap or graphics work is limited, the mechanic performs traditional body shop repair duties, including panel repair, glass replacement, body preparation, and other fleet body maintenance tasks. This position reports directly to the Body Shop Foreman and supports the Fleet Maintenance Department in maintaining a safe, professional, and visually consistent fleet.

Requirements

  • Must be able to drive and operate agency vehicles safely.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of body repair techniques, metalworking, and surface preparation for paint, wraps, or interior material installation.
  • Knowledge of vinyl wrap installation, removal, and repair processes, including proper alignment, adhesion, and finishing.
  • Knowledge of interior marketing material installation, including signage and display placement, securement, and safety compliance.
  • Ability to read and interpret vehicle graphics layouts, wrap templates, interior display diagrams, and brand guidelines.
  • Ability to operate a wide range of body shop and graphics installation tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work standards.
  • Ability to safely work on large vehicles such as buses, including climbing and working on ladders, platforms, or elevated surfaces.
  • Completion of technical, vocational, or trade school training in vehicle body repair, paint, or graphics installation preferred.
  • 6 months to 1 year of experience in vehicle body repair, sheet metal work, or collision repair preferred.
  • Experience with hand-held power tools and standard body shop equipment required.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL Learner’s Class B with P endorsement permit before the end of the probationary period.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with vehicle graphics, vinyl wraps, decals, advertising wraps, or interior marketing materials strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Mig, Tig, and acetylene torch welding helpful.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who currently hold a valid Virginia CDL Class B License with P endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Install, remove, and repair full and partial vehicle wraps, advertising graphics, decals, and fleet branding on buses and agency vehicles.
  • Install, remove, and maintain interior marketing materials, including interior advertising, signage, and passenger announcement displays.
  • Prepare vehicle surfaces for wrap or interior material installation, including cleaning, sanding, and adhesion preparation.
  • Perform precision alignment and installation of vinyl graphics and large-format wraps to ensure professional appearance and brand consistency.
  • Repair damaged or worn wraps, decals, interior displays, or branding elements due to vehicle wear, accidents, or vandalism.
  • Assist in coordinating advertising and marketing material installations to support agency revenue and communication programs.
  • Maintain inventory of wrap materials, adhesives, graphics tools, and interior marketing components.
  • Ensure installations meet manufacturer standards, safety requirements, and agency branding guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot wrap or display failures (e.g., bubbling, peeling, misalignment) and perform corrective repairs.
  • Work with maintenance and operations staff to schedule vehicles for wrap or interior material installation with minimal service disruption.
  • Assist in repairing metal panels by bumping out dents, filling with body filler, sanding, and finishing surfaces.
  • Install or replace body panels using riveting, bonding, and/or welding methods.
  • Replace body glass, mirrors, and exterior components.
  • Perform interior body repairs including seat frames, flooring materials, and interior paneling.
  • Prepare vehicle surfaces for paint and assist with painting activities as required.
  • Assist with accident damage repairs to restore vehicles to safe operating condition.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on wheelchair lifts and complete repairs as necessary.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on passenger doors and door control systems and complete repairs as necessary.
  • Ensure all work meets safety, quality, and appearance standards for transit fleet vehicles.
  • Follow manufacturer procedures and maintenance standards for body repair, wrap installation, and interior marketing installations.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA safety requirements and agency safety policies.
  • Properly use personal protective equipment and specialized installation tools.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment within the body shop.
  • Maintain high-quality installation and repair of fleet wraps, interior marketing materials, and graphics.
  • Support agency branding, advertising, and passenger communication initiatives.
  • Ensure timely completion of wrap and interior marketing installations to support advertising schedules and communication programs.
  • Assist body shop operations during periods of low wrap or interior material workload.
