About The Position

The Chief Veterinarian serves as the senior medical leader for Pet Resource Center of Kansas City, overseeing all veterinary medical operations, clinical protocols, and veterinary staff. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality, accessible veterinary care while advancing PRCKC’s mission to improve the lives of pets and the people who love them. The Chief Veterinarian is responsible for clinical excellence, medical staff leadership, operational collaboration, and the development of innovative veterinary programs that expand access to care for underserved communities. This role works closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to align veterinary services with the organization’s strategic goals and community impact.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited veterinary school.
  • Current Missouri veterinary license in good standing (or ability to obtain).
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical veterinary experience.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

  • Experience in high-volume spay/neuter, shelter medicine, or nonprofit veterinary practice strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadersip Provide medical oversight for all veterinary services, including spay/neuter, wellness care, urgent care, outreach services, and special medical programs.
  • Establish and maintain medical protocols and standards of care consistent with current veterinary best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable veterinary practice regulations, DEA requirements, and state veterinary board rules.
  • Serve as the primary authority for medical decision-making and veterinary policy.
  • Staff Leadership & Development Lead, mentor, and supervise veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, and medical support staff.
  • Foster a collaborative, supportive, and high-performing veterinary team culture.
  • Support recruitment, hiring, and retention of veterinary staff.
  • Provide training, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in managing schedules and staffing plans to maintain clinic efficiency and quality care.
  • Medical Quality & Safety Monitor medical outcomes and maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Oversee infection control, anesthesia protocols, surgical safety, and patient care standards.
  • Review and evaluate complex medical cases as needed.
  • Promote continuous improvement through data analysis and protocol refinement.
  • Operational Collaboration Partner with the Executive Director and leadership team to ensure veterinary services align with organizational strategy and financial sustainability.
  • Collaborate with operations, outreach, and program teams to expand veterinary access programs.
  • Participate in budget planning related to medical supplies, equipment, staffing, and programs.
  • Work with procurement teams to manage pharmaceutical and medical supply vendors.
  • Program Development Support development of innovative veterinary programs including:
  • Community outreach services
  • Mobile veterinary care
  • High-volume spay/neuter initiatives
  • Access-to-care programs for underserved pet owners
  • Assist with planning and implementation of new service lines and medical initiatives.
  • Community & Industry Engagement Represent PRCKC within the veterinary community and animal welfare sector.
  • Build relationships with veterinary partners, shelters, rescues, universities, and industry organizations.
  • Support public education initiatives that promote responsible pet ownership and access to veterinary care.
  • Compliance & Risk Management Ensure adherence to veterinary medical board regulations and professional standards.
  • Maintain proper drug logs, controlled substance management, and medical record compliance.
  • Support organizational risk management and medical incident review.
