About The Position

Collects and processes biological specimens for laboratory analysis and prepares samples to send to reference Laboratories. Performs pre-analytical quality assurance checks on specimens, enters physician laboratory test orders into the LIS, and faxes results to requesting providers for follow up and continuation of care. Specimen collection to include venipuncture for neonate to geriatric populations, urine, nasal MRSA swabs, and urine drug screen collection. Communicates with medical staff to clarify orders and troubleshoot issues. Serves as the face of the laboratory following customer service standards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS -Clinical Functions (Must be competent in all 3 clinical areas) Specimen Collection • Properly identifies all patients, specimens, and orders using 2 patient identifiers and labels according to St. John’s Health policies. Performs QA on all draw room orders. • Follows procedures for properly collecting patient specimens (phlebotomy, UA collection, finger and heel sticks) in all situations (routine, trauma, legal, or disaster). Instructs patients for fertility testing. • Collect urine drug screening specimens following DOT guidelines. Ship specimens and distribute paperwork as appropriate. Received faxes, process, and distribute results as needed. • Ensures that phlebotomy trays and area are fully stocked prior to shift end. • Follows proper safety protocols for patient safety including fainting patients, medical emergencies, and rapid response. Specimen Processing • Performs pre-analytical Quality Assurance checks and documents completely. • Ensure that the correct tests are ordered for all outpatient draws with orders. • Follows documentation and change order procedures. • Communicates with staff, patients and physicians about clarification on orders. • Process all Reference Lab tests accurately (preparation, aliquots, labels, correct temperature, packing, sending). • Monitors Reference Lab delay in testing, exceptions, and reports, following up with issues. Microbiology • Processes routine cultures and parasitology specimens. • Performs and results CLIA waived and moderately complex kit testing and PCR. • Performs kit and media quality control and concurrent testing and per procedure. • Performs inventory, unpackages supply deliveries, prepares and maintains collection supplies, and routine maintenance on standard microbiology equipment and instrumentation. • Process all Microbiology Reference Lab tests accurately (preparation, aliquots, labels, correct temperature, packing, sending). • Monitors Reference Lab delay in testing, exceptions, and reports, following up with issues. • Maintains active quality control organisms. • Participates in Proficiency Testing Customer Service Communication • Answers questions from phone calls or directs the phone call to the appropriate person, addresses questions from patients and hospital staff at the laboratory front desk, and communicates with the Scientists about specimen samples. • Faxes results to requesting providers • Adheres to AIDET in all interactions, internal and external FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS Working Conditions Hospital Clinical Laboratory, outpatient draw room and St. John’s Health facilities. Exposure to infectious, flammable and caustic agents; working in small closed areas and subject to high stress. Must be on-site at the St. John’s Health campus or other facilities to fulfill the responsibilities of this role. Physical Requirements 30% of the time sitting and computer use. 70% of the time standing or walking. Ability to lift 25 pounds. Bending and reaching required. Manual dexterity essential. Must be able to walk without assistance (i.e. crutches, canes, orthopedic boots, scooter). Must be able to pass color blind test upon hire. Direct Reports: None Reports to: Manager Clinical Laboratory Internal & External Contacts - Patients, patient families, all hospital staff, practitioners and their office staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • At least one year of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Good communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Must possess excellent phone etiquette and phone customer service skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Basic Computer skills.
  • BLS required at time of hire.
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certificate through a program with a credential maintenance program required.
  • Current Certificate for The Safe Transport of Division 6.2 Infectious Substances, Biological Specimens, Dry Ice, and Related Materials if working in microbiology.

  • AS or BS Degree in any Applied Sciences.
