About The Position

The Community Clinic Veterinarian is responsible for diagnosing and treating animals with diseases and injuries, performing surgeries to restore their health, implementing preventive medicine protocols, and advising pet owners on proper animal care and nutrition. The person in this position works with a small medical team, providing high-quality pre-, peri-, and postoperative care and wellness to cats and dogs, in a subsidized veterinary care setting. Lastly, maintaining accurate medical records and reports.

Requirements

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Two years of veterinary medicine practice in a shelter or private practice setting.
Valid Driver’s License
Colorado Veterinary License (required) and in good standing
Sincere interest in Animal Friends Alliance’s mission & vision
Knowledge of Google Suite, including Gmail and Google Drive.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel
Knowledge of animal breed, behavior, handling, and care
Knowledge of the animal welfare and shelter medicine fields, and common programs and practices in the fields
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to learn, retain, and communicate a wide variety of information
Detail oriented

Responsibilities

Comes up with differential diagnostics for problems found on physical exams, orchestrates and plans diagnostic plans and treatment plans on medical cases, including follow-up care.
Provides surgical procedures as needed on patients (amputations, enucleations, mass removals, dental procedures, etc).
Works with the veterinary operations team and other staff to ensure sound veterinary medical practices.
Works closely with the Supervising Veterinarian to maintain shelter-controlled drug substances and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements.
Educate the public about diseases and infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Promote animal health and wellness by advising owners on sanitation, feeding, and general care.
Record actions by documenting and updating forms, reports, animal records, and reporting diseases to public health officials.
Ensure compliance with veterinary procedures, ethics, policies, and relevant statutes
Operate diagnostic equipment such as radiography machines and interpret the resulting images.
Euthanize animals when they deem it appropriate, such as in cases of terminal illness or extreme behavioral concerns.
Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses.
Maintains accurate and complete medical records.
Respectfully and clearly communicates with staff and volunteers to meet the needs of the animals in our care.
Trains, supports, and provides constructive feedback to volunteers in this department.
Supervises and directs volunteer veterinarians and veterinary students at the shelter and clinic during their independent studies and/or externships.
Maintains and enforces Standard Operating Procedures, training manuals, and other company regulations with staff and volunteers.
Actively promotes spay/neuter and educates clients on responsible animal guardianship.
Takes part in staff meetings and regularly scheduled meetings with the Supervising Veterinarian and attends quarterly All Staff Meetings;
Provide programs, presentations, and training to staff and community as needed. Participate in programs and activities as a staff member;
Represent Animal Friends Alliance in a professional and courteous manner at all times;
Attends one-on-ones with direct supervisor.
