About The Position

Asheville Humane Society is at the forefront of creating a community where every animal has the opportunity to thrive. Our mission is to transform our community to positively impact pets and people, through compassionate care, community engagement, and progressive initiatives. We are dedicated to collaboration and transparency while creating a vibrant and inclusive culture that values work-life balance, innovation, and making a meaningful impact on the lives of animals and people alike. Position Overview: We are seeking a compassionate, community-minded Contract Veterinarian to deliver accessible wellness services through our mobile outreach clinics. This is not a surgical position. The focus is squarely on preventative and primary care: vaccines, wellness exams, parasite prevention, and client education, provided in a welcoming, low-barrier environment. You will work alongside our dedicated Community Solutions team, serving pet owners who may have limited prior access to veterinary care. In this role, interpersonal skills and a genuine commitment to meeting people where they are matter just as much as clinical competency This contracted position offers flexible scheduling, no on-call duties, and no overnight requirements.

Requirements

  • DVM or VMD degree from an accredited veterinary school.
  • Active North Carolina veterinary license (or eligibility to obtain one).
  • Professional Liability Insurance
  • Experience in general practice, shelter medicine, or community/outreach veterinary settings preferred.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, mobile, community-facing clinic environment.
  • Genuine warmth and strong communication skills; ability to connect with clients of varied backgrounds and circumstances.
  • Passion for keeping pets in homes and addressing the systemic barriers that lead to animal welfare concerns and surrender.
  • Willingness to provide guidance and support to veterinary assistants/technicians as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish language skills are a plus and reflective of the community we serve.

Responsibilities

  • Perform wellness exams and administer core vaccines for dogs and cats.
  • Provide microchipping, heartworm and 4Dx testing, FeLV testing, and basic diagnostics as indicated.
  • Create practical treatment plans and know when to refer clients to a partner veterinary practice for more advanced care.
  • Work comfortably within the scope of available resources; this position does not have imaging capacity and has limited bloodwork availability. We partner with local veterinary practices to provide vouchers for cases requiring more advanced diagnostics.
  • Multitask effectively across patient care, client communication, and recordkeeping in a fast-paced mobile setting.
  • Engage warmly with clients, many of whom may be accessing veterinary services for the first time, building trust and reducing barriers to future care.
  • Maintain accurate medical records for all patients seen.
  • Collaborate with the Community Solutions team and Medical Director to uphold clinic protocols and quality standards.
