Controller (Operations Focused)
About The Position
Empire Recycling is seeking a hands-on Controller to support accounting operations, financial reporting, and operational finance across our multi-division organization. This role is ideal for an experienced Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, or operations-focused accounting professional ready to take the next step into a leadership position. The Controller will work closely with the VP of Finance and operational leaders to ensure accurate reporting, strengthen financial processes, and provide visibility into business performance. The position blends traditional accounting responsibilities with practical involvement in day-to-day operations — particularly within our metals recycling division, where financial accuracy directly supports operational success.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
- Strong background in accounting, cost accounting, or operational finance
- Experience in manufacturing, recycling, logistics, or industrial environments preferred
- Proficiency with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication abilities
- Comfortable working both in an office setting and operational environments when needed

Responsibilities
- Manage daily accounting activities including month-end close, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Consolidate financial results across company divisions and maintain accurate reporting
- Support maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Prepare management reports, variance analysis, and operational financial summaries
- Assist with audit preparation, tax reporting, and financial analysis projects
- Reviewing scale tickets and transaction accuracy
- Assisting with inventory and cost reconciliations
- Monitoring production and processing cost data
- Review divisional financial reporting for paper recycling and trucking/intermodal operations to ensure consistency and accuracy
- Partner with operations leadership to improve documentation, reporting clarity, and cost tracking
- Monitor key performance indicators and help identify operational trends
- Supervise accounting staff and collaborate with divisional administrative teams
- Support ERP system improvements and process efficiencies as needed
