Requirements

  • Work with camp administration, other counselors, parents and campers to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all campers in accordance with the YMCA core values; Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
  • Provide supervision to camp program staff, including planning, assigning and directing work. It is expected that this individual will assist in hiring, training and evaluation of employees, under the guidance of the Director of Camping.
  • Integrate HEPA standards into day camp program, ensuring youth gain opportunities to be physically active for 60 minutes during a full-day program and that standards for healthy eating are met during camp.
  • Provide guidance to day camp counselors and communicate recommendations and concerns to Camp Leadership regarding day camp counselors’ performances.
  • Be able to work in groups, and independently to plan, prepare, and organize engaging and age-appropriate activities for campers.
  • Coordinate field trips and collect any required participant waivers/materials.
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, sports, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, Family Night, field trips, etc.
  • Help with management of department budget and order necessary supplies and materials for camp.
  • Responsible for submitting payroll for camp program staff.
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
  • Ensure that the camp facilities are kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
  • Effectively communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership.
  • Maintain accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
  • Assist in mentoring CIT’s to develop a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
  • These are not the only duties to be performed, some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
  • For all positions: If an applicant is hired, the Ann Arbor Y will provide CPR and First Aid training at no cost to the employee.
