About The Position

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider). It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges. The Collider-Accelerator Department’s (C-AD) Cryogenics Group is responsible for the operations, maintenance, and upgrade of a very large and complex central liquid helium refrigerator plant (LHe plant) and distribution system. This plant cools many superconducting magnets and superconducting RF (SRF) cavities in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and will service the future Electron Ion Collider (EIC). Aspects of the RHIC LHe plant will be upgraded to replace electrical and mechanical end-of-life equipment, increase the cold end capacity, and improve efficiency in preparation for EIC operations. The C-AD Cryogenics Group is partnering with the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory to design, fabricate, and install new satellite plants and distribution systems that are needed for additional SC magnets and SRF cavities required for the EIC. In addition, the C-AD Cryogenics Group operates a small LHe plant for the C-AD SRF cavity test facility. This facility is being upgraded to improve its capability and throughput including the procurement and installation of a larger local 4.5K LHe plant and LHe distribution system. The C-AD Cryogenics Group also supports other cryogenics systems throughout the BNL complex and participates in DOE level cryogenic reviews. This effort is supported by a large C-AD Cryogenics Group staff which includes plant process, mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers, as well as mechanical and electrical technicians. Position Description The C-AD Cryogenics Group has an opening for a seasoned electrical or mechanical engineering manager with experience in the engineering and operations of large industrial process equipment and complex piping systems, or complex PLC-based data acquisition and SCADA systems, for chemical plants or cryogenic process plants. Work scope will include managing the day-to-day work of the Cryo Group, supervising engineers and technicians, and managing upgrades and maintenance of the current central liquid helium processing plant and other cryogenic equipment, and the design and planning for future EIC cryogenic systems and equipment. This position has a high level of visibility at BNL and the EIC project, and interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
