About The Position

The Director of Construction Management is a senior leadership role within the Generation Construction organization, accountable for the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of construction activities for new power generation assets. This role provides strategic and operational leadership across the full project lifecycle—from late-stage engineering and construction through system startup, commissioning, and turnover to Operations—ensuring projects are delivered in accordance within design and regulatory requirements, safety standards, and business objectives. This position partners closely with Project Development, Engineering, Project Management, Operations, Environmental, and external contractor and OEM partners to support the delivery of new power plants and major generation infrastructure.

Requirements

  • 10+ years Minimum 12-15 years of progressive experience in power generation construction, startup, and commissioning, including leadership roles.
  • 4-6 years Demonstrated experience delivering large, complex power generation or industrial infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of utility safety standards, construction practices, commissioning processes, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and manage contractor performance.
  • Experience with EPC and third-party commissioning models.
  • Familiarity with unionized construction environments and utility labor agreements.
  • Experience supporting operational turnover and long-term asset reliability.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide enterprise-level leadership for construction activities across new generation projects, including gas-fired, peaking, renewable, storage, and emerging technologies.
  • Build and lead a high-performing organization of construction managers and quality oversight.
  • Serve as a key advisor to executive leadership on construction readiness, risk, cost, schedule, and operational handoff.
  • Provide leadership and standards for the development and execution of project safety, environmental, quality and construction execution plans.
  • Oversee construction execution and readiness activities to ensure assets are installed in accordance with approved design, specifications, permits, and quality standards.
  • Ensure effective coordination with construction contractors, OEMs, third-party commissioning firms, and internal stakeholders.
  • Drive disciplined turnover of assets from Construction to Operations, ensuring care, custody, and control requirements are met.
  • Manage any potential construction warranty claims through completion.
  • Champion a strong safety culture consistent with NiSource and OSHA requirements, emphasizing hazard identification, safe work practices, and incident prevention.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., environmental permits, PHMSA/ALI where applicable, utility operating standards).
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate construction and commissioning risks that could impact safety, reliability, schedule, or cost.
  • Maintain accountability for construction budgets, forecasts, and cost controls.
  • Monitor and report on project performance metrics, including safety, schedule adherence, cost, and commissioning readiness.
  • Support capital planning, staffing strategies, and resource forecasting for the generation construction portfolio.
  • Partner with Operations to ensure training, documentation, and procedures are in place prior to asset turnover.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Project Management to resolve constructability and commissioning issues.
  • Support union and non-union workforce coordination in alignment with collective bargaining agreements and company labor strategy.
