About The Position

Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Performing Arts, Events, and Campus Engagements, the Director of Campus Events provides leadership, strategic planning, and operational oversight for a wide spectrum of university-sponsored events. This includes large-scale public events such as the St. Patrick’s Day alternative celebration, non-Cal Poly athletic events at Spanos Stadium and signature programs such as the Cal Poly Rodeo and Western Heritage Events. The Director of Campus Events serves as the primary operational liaison for campus event execution, working closely with campus service providers, community partners, and external vendors to ensure events meet University standards for safety, accessibility, inclusivity, and excellence. The position works in close partnership with the AVP of Performing Arts, Events and Campus Engagements to align event programming with the University’s mission, enhance community engagement, and maximize the visibility and impact of Cal Poly’s event portfolio. Campus Events supports the planning, coordination, and execution of community athletic competitions, university ceremonies, concerts, and special events that enrich campus life and community engagement. The department manages Spanos Stadium and collaborates with campus partners, external organizations, and vendors to deliver safe, high-quality events that reflect Cal Poly’s values and enhance the student, alumni, and visitor experience. Through effective operations, logistical support, and event services, the department ensures facilities are welcoming, well-maintained, and adaptable to a wide range of programming while promoting school spirit and community connection.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute a diverse range of public events (cultural, academic, athletic, performing arts, and community engagement).
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of performing arts management in a non-metropolitan environment.
  • Working knowledge of effective personnel management practices and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Bachelor’s degree and seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, event management, fundraising or public relations.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
