Job Purpose: The Director of Strategic Communications serves as GSI’s lead communications strategist, responsible for shaping and advancing the organization’s messaging, brand, and public voice. Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, this role develops and implements communications strategies that support GSI’s strategic initiatives, strengthen engagement with partners and stakeholders, and elevate the organization’s influence across the region. The Director leads the organization’s communications function and ensures that messaging across initiatives, programs, and events is clear, consistent, and aligned with GSI’s mission and priorities. This position provides leadership and direction to the Marketing & Communications Coordinator and the Events & Engagement Manager, ensuring communication and engagement activities support the organization’s broader strategy. Working closely with the Chief Strategy Officer, CEO, and senior leadership team, the Director translates complex economic, policy, and organizational priorities into compelling communications that inform and engage diverse audiences. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who can synthesize complex information, identify key messages, and move ideas forward in a dynamic environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in communications, public affairs, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing communications strategies and managing communications initiatives.
  • Experience supervising staff and coordinating cross-functional teams.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the organization’s crisis communications framework, including protocols, messaging guidance, and response strategies to support leadership during sensitive or rapidly evolving situations.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with GSI’s mission, priorities, and initiatives.
  • Serve as the organization’s lead strategist for messaging, brand alignment, and narrative development.
  • Advise leadership on communications strategies that strengthen GSI’s credibility, visibility, and regional influence.
  • Translate complex policy, economic, and organizational information into clear, compelling messaging.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and brand voice across communications platforms and initiatives.
  • Serve as the organization’s lead writer and editorial voice, developing and guiding high-impact written communications including leadership messaging, strategic reports, op-eds, speeches, and major organizational announcements.
  • Establish messaging frameworks that guide communications across programs, initiatives, and campaigns.
  • Oversee development of written and digital communications including newsletters, website content, social media messaging, presentations, and marketing materials.
  • Provide editorial oversight and quality control for communications produced by the communications team.
  • Ensure communications effectively communicate GSI’s work, priorities, and regional impact.
  • Establish strategic direction and priorities for digital communications and marketing activities.
  • Guide development of social media and digital content strategies that increase engagement and visibility.
  • Coordinate communications calendars and campaign priorities across organizational initiatives.
  • Monitor digital engagement metrics and adjust communications strategies accordingly.
  • Provide strategic direction to the Events & Engagement Manager to ensure events reinforce organizational priorities and strengthen partner engagement.
  • Ensure event messaging, promotional materials, speaker communications, and scripts align with GSI’s communications strategy.
  • Support communications planning for major initiatives, campaigns, and regional convenings.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to the Marketing & Communications Coordinator and the Events & Engagement Manager.
  • Establish priorities, workflows, and expectations to ensure communications activities are coordinated and effective.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that supports professional development and accountability.
  • Partner with internal teams to ensure communications support organizational priorities and initiatives.
  • Contribute to an organizational culture of teamwork, support, engagement, and empowerment.
  • Provide strategic input on issues affecting the organization.
  • Work with colleagues to discover and develop ways to retain, grow, and better align and leverage GSI resources for greater impact.
  • Communicate the mission of GSI to personal and professional networks.
  • Regularly evaluate GSI’s systems and processes for continuous improvement.
